Flavor Flav has had enough of America’s gun violence—and he’s demanding the country take bold action to save lives.
In a powerful op-ed for Newsweek, the 65-year-old Public Enemy rapper called on the U.S. government to ban all civilian firearms, saying the nation is in the midst of an “epidemic of gun violence” with no end in sight.
“Our Schools Aren’t Safe. Our Kids Aren’t Safe.”
As a father, Flav said he lives in constant fear every time he drops his kids off at school.
🗣️ “Our schools aren’t safe and our kids aren’t safe. This is because gun protection laws are weak.”
The hip-hop icon argues that “the wrong people” have far too much access to guns—and he would know, having spent time in jail for gun-related offenses that landed him on Rikers Island.
🗣️ “The lack of gun laws has created a violence epidemic here in the United States that is nowhere else in the world. Stop putting a price tag on the heads of our children.”
A Call to Ban Semi-Automatic Weapons
Flav made it clear: no civilian should ever need a semi-automatic weapon.
🗣️ “Folks who are scared and fearful wouldn’t have to protect themselves with guns if all guns were banned.”
He warned that fear and power are fueling the problem in America.
🗣️ “We need to flip the narrative. Let our fear of losing our children be more powerful than our fear of our next-door neighbor.”
“We’ve Become Numb to This”
Flav criticized how frequent school shootings have become—and how quickly the news cycle moves on.
🗣️ “This happens so often, we’ve started to become numb to it as a society. It’s barely in the news if it’s less than a handful of people killed. The hits just keep on coming.”
He pointed out how easily children can access guns in their own homes and use them as an outlet for their fears of rejection, bullying, and isolation.
🗣️ “These kids are motivated by fear—fear of not being accepted, fear of being made fun of—and they grab their parents’ guns and open fire.”
Fans React: “Flav Is Speaking Truth”
Since the op-ed dropped, social media has been ablaze with reactions:
🗣️ “Flavor Flav is right. We’ve normalized mass shootings, and it’s terrifying.”
🗣️ “He’s saying what politicians are too scared to say. Ban the guns.”
🗣️ “I never thought Flavor Flav would be the voice of reason in 2025, but here we are.”
A Bold Message on Independence Day
The timing of Flav’s plea—just ahead of July 4th—has sparked even more conversation about freedom, safety, and what it means to protect future generations.
🗣️ “Something to chew on this July 4th,” Flav wrote.
