Just days after stepping into the ring with Jake Paul, boxing star Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is now behind bars—this time over shocking allegations connecting him to weapons trafficking and cartel activities.
The 39-year-old former champion and son of Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. was arrested by ICE agents Wednesday in Studio City, California.
Dramatic Arrest Caught on Video
Fox 11 LA obtained footage of Chavez Jr.’s arrest, showing agents from the Department of Homeland Security taking him into custody over an active warrant in Mexico.
Homeland Security officials confirmed to TMZ Sports that Chavez Jr. is accused of trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives, and being linked to organized crime networks south of the border.
🗣️ “This Sinaloa Cartel affiliate with an active arrest warrant was apprehended for trafficking guns and explosives,” DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.
🗣️ “Our message is clear: We will find you, and you will face consequences.”
Facing Extradition to Mexico
Chavez Jr. is currently being processed and is expected to be deported back to Mexico to face charges.
The DHS alleges Chavez Jr.’s arrest was part of a larger crackdown on cartel-affiliated individuals operating in the United States.
🗣️ “Under President Trump, no one is above the law—including world-famous athletes. The days of unchecked cartel violence are over.”
A Troubled Past Comes Back to Haunt Him
This isn’t Chavez Jr.’s first run-in with the law. In the U.S., he has a criminal record dating back to 2012 when he was arrested for DUI and driving without a license.
Earlier this year, in January 2024, Chavez Jr. was also busted for illegal possession of an assault weapon.
From Boxing Rings to Courtrooms
Chavez Jr., who once shared the ring with elite fighters like Canelo Alvarez and most recently faced Jake Paul, has had a turbulent career marked by controversies both inside and outside the ring.
His father, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., has yet to issue a public statement on his son’s arrest.
