In celebration of Black History Month, ESPN is breaking new ground with a bold and groundbreaking initiative. The network is set to air its inaugural all-Black staffed NBA game on Wednesday, February 5, as the Atlanta Hawks face off against the San Antonio Spurs. This highly anticipated event will air at 7 p.m. ET and is part of ESPN’s “Black History Always” campaign—a tribute to the contributions of Black professionals in the world of sports broadcasting and beyond.

The game will mark a significant milestone for ESPN, as it will be the first time in history that the network has employed an entirely Black staff in all key roles for an NBA broadcast. From production and operations to transmission, social media, graphics, and commentary, the broadcast will feature an all-Black team working both in front of and behind the camera. Over 40 Black ESPN employees will come together to create this historic broadcast, showcasing the talent, diversity, and excellence within the Black community in sports media.

Rodney Vaughn, a producer at ESPN, shared his excitement about the significance of this broadcast. “I’m thrilled that this broadcast can inspire young people dreaming of a career in sports broadcasting while also bringing together so many talented industry professionals,” Vaughn said. “It feels like we are creating Black history in real-time.”

ESPN’s NBA studio programming on February 5 will also be led by an all-Black team. Malika Andrews will host both NBA Today (3-4 p.m. ET) and NBA Countdown (6:30-7 p.m.), while commentators and analysts like Chiney Ogwumike, Udonis Haslem, and Kendrick Perkins will provide expert insight and analysis. Demetrius Harris and Terrell Bouza will serve as the producers for the studio broadcasts, further emphasizing the depth of Black talent shaping the future of sports journalism.

The event will be complemented by special features on Andscape, ESPN’s digital platform dedicated to elevating Black voices in sports. An essay by Marc J. Spears will highlight the remarkable career of Mark Jones, while legends of sports journalism, Michael Wilbon and William Rhoden, will offer video essays, adding a deeper layer of insight into the historical significance of the broadcast.

Inspiring Future Generations

This initiative goes beyond just a one-time broadcast—it aims to inspire future generations of Black broadcasters, producers, and journalists to pursue careers in sports media. With this historic event, ESPN is creating a platform for young people to see themselves reflected in the world of sports broadcasting, showing them that their dreams can be achieved with hard work, dedication, and a passion for the industry.

Rodney Vaughn, who has been deeply involved in the production of the broadcast, expressed his belief that the event would resonate far beyond the sports world. “This is about showing young people, especially young people of color, that there is a place for them in the sports media world,” he said. “It’s about creating a path for them and providing opportunities for them to excel.”

A Call to Action for Diversity in Sports Media

While this broadcast serves as a celebration of Black excellence, it also sends a powerful message about the need for continued diversity and inclusion in sports media. The history of sports broadcasting has been dominated by predominantly white voices, but events like this show that the industry is evolving and that Black professionals are making their mark in every aspect of sports media, from on-air talent to behind-the-scenes roles.
