Mark Gastineau is taking legal action against ESPN, claiming the network severely damaged his reputation by airing an edited version of his 2023 altercation with Brett Favre.

The Controversial Footage

The incident occurred in November 2023 at a sports event in Chicago, where Gastineau confronted Brett Favre about a controversial sack from 2002. The sack, which Favre gave up to Michael Strahan, helped Strahan break Gastineau’s single-season sack record—a moment that has long haunted the New York Jets legend.

In the ESPN footage, Gastineau appeared visibly upset, repeatedly telling Favre, “You hurt me.” The clip was later used as a teaser for the network’s 30 For 30 documentary, “The New York Sack Exchange.”

Gastineau’s Claims Against ESPN

Gastineau, however, insists that ESPN maliciously edited the video, omitting a key moment where he and Favre shook hands. He argues this made the encounter seem more aggressive than it actually was, leading to social media backlash.

In his federal lawsuit, filed Tuesday in New York, the former NFL star claims:

  • He never authorized ESPN to film the private conversation.
  • He was promised editorial approval when he signed on for the documentary in January 2024.
  • The altered clip subjected him to ridicule, scorn, and online attacks.

As a result, Gastineau is now seeking $25 million in damages.

Brett Favre’s Reaction

Favre also took issue with how ESPN handled the situation. In December 2024, he posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating:

“It’s not the kind of moment that should be filmed and released. It was a private moment of frustration between two old football warriors.”

Despite the controversy, Favre praised Gastineau, saying:

“Mark definitely left an indelible mark on the game. I hope this brings attention to just how great he was.”

I want to clear the air on the footage released showing a small dustup between myself and Mark Gastineau, the former New York Jet, so here’s a ????.

Awaiting ESPN’s Response

As of now, ESPN has not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
