The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers may have become a beloved cultural phenomenon since its debut in 1993, but shocking revelations from its early days paint a troubling picture of a production driven by desperation and disregard for safety. The hit series, which launched a multi-billion-dollar franchise of toys, spin-offs, movies, and merchandise, apparently had a much darker beginning.

In the upcoming episode of Hollywood Demons titled “Dark Side of the Power Rangers,” Audri DuBois, who played the original Yellow Power Ranger in the pilot episode, opens up about a harrowing experience on set that left her questioning the ethics of the production team.

According to DuBois, the pilot was filmed in the scorching desert heat, with temperatures soaring to a brutal 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Conditions were far from ideal, particularly for actors wearing heavy, uncomfortable costumes. One such actor, playing a villainous character, was dressed in a stifling wetsuit and a thick rubber mask—a dangerous combination under such intense heat.

As DuBois recalls, the heat became unbearable for the actor, who collapsed from heatstroke mid-shoot. Instead of halting production to ensure the actor received immediate care, the producers made a shocking decision that would haunt DuBois for years to come.

A Callous Decision to Continue Filming

While the distressed actor lay on the ground “flopping around” in the dirt, waiting for an ambulance, the production crew decided to keep the cameras rolling. As DuBois describes it, the higher-ups were desperate to finish shooting the pilot on their tight schedule and limited budget.

“They were so focused on getting the pilot completed,” DuBois explains, “that they offered $100 to anyone willing to strip the fallen actor and put on his costume to continue filming.”

Someone eventually took the offer, putting on the sweat-soaked suit to resume filming while the original actor awaited medical help. For DuBois, the entire experience felt deeply unethical. She admits that while she and her fellow cast members were uncomfortable with the situation, they had little choice but to comply with the production’s demands.

A Franchise Built on Controversy

The original pilot episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers laid the foundation for what would become one of the most successful children’s franchises of all time. When the series debuted in 1993, it became an instant hit, captivating audiences worldwide with its colorful characters, fast-paced action, and catchy phrases like “It’s Morphin’ Time!”

But as Hollywood Demons reveals, the seemingly innocent show held dark secrets behind the scenes. The show’s production was marred by poor working conditions, low pay, and apparent exploitation of its cast members.

Former cast and crew members have stepped forward to reveal shocking incidents that go beyond the heatstroke incident. According to the show’s creators, Dark Side of the Power Rangers will delve into allegations of fraud, exploitation, and even murder linked to the Power Rangers franchise.

DuBois’ story is only one of many that suggests a troubling pattern of negligence and exploitation. As a low-budget production aimed at children, the crew was reportedly expected to cut corners wherever possible, often compromising safety and ethical standards.

The Industry’s Unforgiving Nature

DuBois’ experience also highlights a broader issue within the entertainment industry: the treatment of young actors and low-budget productions. While the Power Rangers series went on to make millions, the original actors were paid meager wages and given little consideration for their well-being.

Audri DuBois herself was replaced after the pilot, reportedly due to disagreements over pay. “They wanted us to work six days a week, 12 hours a day, for very little money. When I asked for something reasonable, they replaced me,” she has previously stated.

The franchise’s relentless drive for profit over the years only seems to underline the allegations of mistreatment and disregard for safety that plagued the original production.

Why These Stories Matter

Episodes like “Dark Side of the Power Rangers” are essential because they shed light on the often-ignored realities of the entertainment industry. For many who grew up watching the series, these revelations are shocking and upsetting. They also raise questions about how other popular children’s shows were produced and whether similar unethical practices were common.

The fact that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers became a global sensation despite these controversies suggests a troubling acceptance of mistreatment within the industry. It serves as a reminder that the glitzy world of entertainment often comes at a significant cost to those behind the scenes.

Where to Watch

Dark Side of the Power Rangers premieres on Monday at 9 PM ET/6 PM PT, exclusively on ID and streaming on Max. With former cast and crew members detailing the seedy realities behind the beloved series, the episode promises to be a compelling and eye-opening exploration of one of the 1990s’ most iconic franchises.

Stay tuned for more shocking revelations and insights as Hollywood Demons continues to uncover the untold stories behind the entertainment industry’s biggest hits.
