53-year-old Paul Doyle has been hit with seven criminal charges, including multiple counts of grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, in connection to the chaos that unfolded during the Reds’ celebratory procession earlier this week.

Charges Revealed in Shocking Crowd Attack

Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims confirmed the update on Thursday, revealing that Doyle is facing the following serious charges:

  • Two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
  • Two counts of causing unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent
  • Two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent
  • One count of dangerous driving

The announcement came after an extensive investigation into the disturbing incident, which occurred during one of the city’s most joyous moments — a public celebration of Liverpool FC’s latest football triumph.

79 Injured as SUV Plows Through Celebrating Fans

Police say Doyle was behind the wheel of a dark-colored SUV that barreled through a dense crowd of Liverpool FC fans gathered on the streets to celebrate their club’s achievements. Witnesses described scenes of panic, screams, and confusion as the vehicle struck numerous individuals before finally coming to a stop.

In total, 79 people were reported injured, with several suffering serious wounds that required immediate medical attention.

Sims addressed the tragedy in a statement:

“As always, our thoughts remain with all of those injured and affected by this appalling incident.”

Victims Await Justice Amidst Outpouring of Support

Local prosecutor Sarah Hammond emphasized the seriousness of the charges and pledged to pursue justice for the victims.

“It is important to ensure that every victim gets the justice they deserve,” she stated.

Many of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals, and support services have been made available for those affected. The Liverpool community has rallied in support, with fans and city leaders condemning the act and offering aid to the victims’ families.

Paul Doyle Taken Into Custody, Faces Court

Authorities confirmed that Doyle has been remanded into custody and is set to appear before a judge on Friday morning to face the charges. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment under UK law, especially for the most serious GBH charges with intent.

What Happened During the Parade?

The incident took place during what was supposed to be a day of triumph and celebration. Thousands had gathered to cheer on Liverpool FC during their trophy parade through the heart of Merseyside. The celebration quickly turned tragic as the SUV tore through the crowd.

Eyewitnesses reported that there was no indication or warning before the car accelerated into the fans. “One moment we were singing and chanting, the next people were screaming and scrambling,” said one local supporter who witnessed the incident.

Political Leaders, Club Officials Speak Out

The incident has drawn swift responses from across the football world and beyond. Liverpool FC officials released a statement expressing deep concern and solidarity with those affected, while city leaders have promised increased security at future public events.

“This senseless act has cast a shadow over what should have been a day of unity and pride for Liverpool,” said Mayor Joanne Anderson. “Our city will not be shaken by violence. We stand with every person who was hurt.”

Community Support and Investigation Ongoing

Police have asked anyone with video footage or additional information about the incident to come forward, as investigators continue piecing together the timeline and circumstances surrounding the event.

Meanwhile, local community organizations have mobilized to provide counseling and support for victims and witnesses, with multiple fundraising campaigns launched to help those affected by injuries and trauma.

What’s Next for the Case?

Doyle’s court appearance on Friday will mark the beginning of what is expected to be a high-profile legal process. Prosecutors are reportedly preparing to present surveillance footage, eyewitness testimonies, and forensic evidence to establish intent and the full scope of harm caused.

Given the severity of the charges — particularly grievous bodily harm with intent, which is among the most serious non-lethal offenses in British law — Doyle could face life in prison if found guilty.

Final Thoughts

This week’s tragedy has shocked football fans and the wider UK public. What was meant to be a celebration of sport and community spirit turned into a nightmare — one that left nearly 80 people injured and countless more emotionally scarred.

As the legal proceedings begin, many hope that justice will be served swiftly and that the victims will receive the support and recognition they deserve.
