“We Nearly Canceled,” Questlove Admits After Festival Delay and Chaos

Over the weekend, what was supposed to be a celebration of music, culture, and community turned into a logistical nightmare at the 18th annual Roots Picnic 2025. With headliners like Latto, Meek Mill, GloRilla, and Lenny Kravitz on the bill, expectations were sky-high. But Mother Nature had other plans—and fans were left waiting in hours-long lines, trudging through muddy terrain, and coping with a major delay.

Now, Questlove—co-founder of The Roots and the visionary behind the festival—has broken his silence.

“This Year Has Been Particularly Challenging” — Questlove Opens Up

Taking to Instagram after a weekend of backlash, Questlove addressed the frustration and disappointment many fans expressed after battling the elements at Philadelphia’s Mann Center.

“Good People & The Attendees Of The Roots Picnic 2025. Aight— I know today wasn’t ideal for The Roots Picnic in this 18th year of 2025,” he began. “This year has been particularly challenging to say the least.”

According to Quest, the problems started long before the gates opened. Torrential rain from May 30th through the early morning of May 31st left the grounds soaked and unstable. The usually vibrant festival site was left looking like a muddy battleground.

“We Nearly Canceled” — Safety Concerns Took Priority

Fans who endured delays of up to three hours were unaware that behind the scenes, cancellation was on the table.

“We nearly canceled The Picnic because conditions were unsafe for everyone involved,” Quest revealed.

Organizers scrambled to repair the site in record time, sourcing mulch to absorb water, and recalibrating the entire performance schedule.

“Ultimately, we chose to take extra time to repair the site to ensure safety for all ticket holders,” he explained. “We prioritized caution above all else.”

Despite the efforts, fans were visibly frustrated by the long wait times and poor communication—something Quest acknowledged in his post.

Maxwell Saves the Day, Latto Lights Up the Night

In true showbiz fashion, the show went on—and some last-minute heroics saved the evening.

“We managed to revise the schedule so that all artists, including headliners Maxwell (whom we ALL owe an incredible amount of gratitude for doing us a solid with seconds on the clock) and Latto, could perform without violating city noise curfews.”

Maxwell’s grace under pressure and Latto’s energy brought the crowd back to life. And while the day was chaotic, fans still got to experience unforgettable performances from GloRilla, Meek Mill, Miguel, KAYTRANADA, Jeezy, and Tems.

Behind-the-Scenes Heroes: Live Nation Staff Praised

While social media buzzed with complaints, Questlove made sure to shout out the unsung heroes who pulled the festival back from the brink.

“I’m personally thanking all the Live Nation Staff —led by Shawn Gee—for moving at lightning speed in solving the many obstacles and puzzles it took to even make today happen.”

Their work, done largely behind the scenes, helped ensure that a dangerous situation didn’t turn into something worse.

Fan Reactions: Mixed Emotions Amid the Mud

While some fans praised the performances and efforts made by the organizers, others didn’t hold back.

“I’ve been coming to Roots Picnic for 5 years. This was by far the worst experience,” wrote one user on Twitter (now X).
“The lines were insane. People passed out. There was no clear communication.”
“Still—seeing Latto and Tems made it worth it.”

On Instagram, others echoed Questlove’s sentiment, urging grace in the face of uncontrollable weather.

So, What’s Next for The Roots Picnic?

After 18 years, The Roots Picnic has become a Philly institution—bringing together hip hop, R&B, culture, podcasts, and community like no other festival. But 2025’s challenges raise the stakes for next year.

Can organizers bounce back stronger in 2026? Fans will be watching closely to see how the festival adapts—and whether this year’s chaos results in better planning and communication next time around.

Final Thoughts from Questlove

Questlove ended his heartfelt message with a note of gratitude and realism:

“We’ve done this 18 times and learned something new every single year. Thank you for sticking with us.”
