A devastating air disaster in India is bringing renewed attention to a haunting warning made by a former Boeing quality manager — one that could have foretold the very tragedy that unfolded this week.

John Barnett, a former Boeing insider and industry veteran, appeared on TMZ Live in January 2024, sounding the alarm about what he called serious safety lapses in the construction and inspection processes for Boeing aircraft — including the now-crashed 787 Dreamliner.

On Thursday, just 30 seconds after takeoff, Air India Flight 171, a 787 jet en route to London, crashed in a fiery explosion near the city of Ahmedabad. Of the 242 passengers and crew on board, only one survivor has been recovered.

Though officials have yet to confirm a mechanical failure, the plane’s immediate distress call and catastrophic descent are eerily consistent with concerns Barnett raised.

Barnett’s Chilling Interview: “They Removed Quality From the Process”

In a January appearance on TMZ Live, Barnett laid bare his insider knowledge of Boeing’s manufacturing decisions — singling out the 737 and the 787 Dreamliner as examples of aircraft compromised by a “decline in quality control.”

“They put a strong effort into removing quality from the process,”
Barnett told TMZ.

“Inspections were slashed, experts were let go, and the pressure to meet production targets outweighed safety.”

He went on to claim that Boeing had, for years, cut inspection crews and veteran technicians, while discouraging internal pushback.

That same month, he filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the aerospace giant, alleging retaliation after he spoke out.

Two Months Later, Barnett Was Found Dead

The tragic twist? Just two months after that interview, Barnett was found dead by suicide, shocking colleagues and reigniting scrutiny of his allegations.

He had been embroiled in a high-stakes legal battle with Boeing, claiming he faced harassment and career sabotage for speaking up.

Last month, Boeing quietly settled a wrongful death lawsuit with Barnett’s family — a move some critics say was meant to keep damning revelations out of court.

Now, a Deadly Crash Echoes His Warnings

Thursday’s disaster — one of the worst aviation tragedies in India in years — is already drawing uncomfortable parallels to Barnett’s claims.

Though the cause is still under investigation, the fact that a 787 Dreamliner failed just seconds after takeoff is fueling speculation about whether systemic flaws played a role.

“We heard a ‘mayday’ over the tower just after wheels up,”
said a control tower technician.

“Then silence — and smoke on the horizon.”

This crash adds to a growing list of headlines surrounding Boeing in recent years, including multiple 737 MAX disasters, door panel blowouts, and now — renewed scrutiny of the 787 Dreamliner.

Boeing CEO Issues Statement Amid Scrutiny

In response, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg issued a formal statement:

“Our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of the passengers and crew on board Air India Flight 171… A Boeing team stands ready to support the investigation led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau.”

The company says it is fully cooperating with the AAIB (Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau) under protocols outlined by the United Nations’ ICAO (Annex 13).

Internet Reacts: “He Tried to Warn Us”

As news of the crash broke, social media users and aviation experts began revisiting Barnett’s interviews — with many calling him a hero who tried to prevent the inevitable.

“John Barnett spoke up. He begged for accountability,”
one tweet read.

“Now hundreds are dead. How many more warnings will it take?”

Others are demanding a broader criminal investigation into Boeing’s internal practices and whether prior whistleblower complaints were ever acted on.

What Happens Next?

India’s AAIB has begun analyzing flight data recorders and black box contents, with help from international aviation teams.

Meanwhile, Boeing faces growing pressure to explain what steps — if any — were taken following Barnett’s allegations.

And for many watching this tragedy unfold, there’s only one question:
Was this avoidable?
