In an exclusive interview with CBS Sports on Friday, June 13, Sanders shared the intimate details of the terrifying experience, shining a light on a health issue that often goes unnoticed.

“I couldn’t believe it, honestly,” Sanders admitted. “I thought it was like heartburn, but it just kind of persisted.”

The Moment That Changed Everything

During the recruiting trip, Sanders began feeling a strange sensation he initially dismissed as heartburn. But as the discomfort lingered, he knew something was wrong.

Rather than ignore the symptoms, Sanders took immediate action, leaving the visit early and driving himself to the emergency room.

“Of all things, I don’t know why, that just never entered my mind,” he said about suspecting a heart attack. “I’m learning through this process that there aren’t necessarily any warning signs, unless you do what we’re encouraging people to do, which is to go to the doctor, get tested for LDL-C levels, or bad cholesterol.”

Sanders’ revelation underscores a vital health message: heart attacks can strike anyone — regardless of age, fitness, or profile.

The Making of a Heart Attack: A Documentary That Educates and Inspires

Sanders isn’t just sharing his story in interviews. He appears in The Making of a Heart Attack, a powerful documentary premiering Saturday, June 14, at 1 p.m. on A&E.

The film features Sanders alongside four other individuals who have experienced heart attacks or strokes, exploring the hidden risks, lasting impacts, and what they wish others knew.

“It’s really been an education for me, learning about how frequent this happens all over the U.S.,” Sanders said. “Conversing with these other individuals who are part of this documentary, who have very insightful, gripping stories about the journey that they’ve been on. It’s just really amazing. I think it will get a lot of people’s attention.”

The documentary aims to raise awareness about cardiovascular health and encourage viewers to take preventive steps before it’s too late.

How Barry Sanders Turned His Health Around

After his heart attack, Sanders followed his doctor’s advice to the letter — incorporating more walking, dietary changes, and the right medication into his daily routine.

The results? He’s now healthier and happier than ever.

“It’s definitely made me healthier and happier,” Sanders shared. “Being the kind of athlete that I was, I would see people walking and I would wonder, like, ‘What kind of workout is that?’ But there’s a thing called a heart-healthy workout, where you’re just getting your heart rate up a little bit over a certain period of time, and that’s just really good for your heart.”

Sanders confessed that before his scare, he had a certain “ignorance” about heart health and the importance of consistent, moderate exercise.

Why Barry Sanders’ Story Matters Now More Than Ever

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, and stories like Sanders’ shine a critical spotlight on the importance of early detection and lifestyle changes.

His story is a powerful reminder that even elite athletes — people who many assume are in perfect health — can face serious risks.

The documentary and Sanders’ candid interview emphasize:

  • No one is immune to heart disease
  • Warning signs can be subtle or mistaken for less serious issues like heartburn
  • Proactive health screenings and lifestyle changes save lives

What You Can Learn From Barry Sanders’ Journey

Barry Sanders’ experience offers crucial lessons:

  • Don’t ignore persistent chest discomfort or unusual symptoms
  • Get regular health checkups, including cholesterol screenings
  • Adopt heart-healthy habits like walking and balanced nutrition
  • Understand that prevention is key — heart attacks don’t always come with obvious warnings

When and Where to Watch

The Making of a Heart Attack premieres on Saturday, June 14, at 1 p.m. on A&E.

If you or someone you love could benefit from learning more about heart health, this documentary is a must-watch.

Final Thoughts

Barry Sanders’ openness about his heart attack scare is a wake-up call to fans and health-conscious viewers everywhere. His journey from denial to education and transformation shows how awareness and action can make all the difference.
