According to NBC News, the Transportation Security Administration is quietly testing a new policy that could allow travelers to keep their shoes on while passing through airport security at select U.S. airports.

If successful, this pilot program could roll out nationwide—ending years of what many flyers call the “gym class humiliation” of slipping off their Yeezys and Air Force 1s in front of strangers.

The Rule That Started It All

Since 2006, TSA has required travelers to remove their shoes before entering screening areas.

The rule came in response to Richard Reid, aka the “Shoe Bomber,” who in 2001 tried (and failed) to ignite explosives hidden in his sneakers on a transatlantic flight.

While passengers and crew stopped Reid’s attempt, the incident led to sweeping security changes—including the infamous no-shoes rule that’s been irritating travelers ever since.

PreCheck Privileges Coming to All?

For years, TSA PreCheck members have enjoyed a major perk: walking through security without removing shoes, belts, or laptops.

Now, TSA officials say they’re exploring ways to bring that same convenience to more travelers, without compromising safety.

In a statement Monday, the agency shared:

“TSA is exploring new and innovative ways to enhance passenger experience while maintaining high security standards.”

While there’s no official launch date yet, early feedback from the test sites has been positive.

Flyers React: “It’s About Time”

The potential change has already sparked chatter online.

???? “Keeping my shoes on is all I ask for. TSA’s about to change lives.”

???? “Finally. I don’t need to be barefoot in front of 100 people at 6 a.m.”

???? “This better happen before my next trip to Miami!”

What’s Next?

For now, the TSA hasn’t confirmed which airports are involved in the pilot program or how soon travelers can expect a nationwide rollout.

But momentum is building—and your next flight might just be the one where you walk through security with your sneakers snug.

???? Would you feel safer keeping your shoes on at TSA checkpoints—or should the rule stay? Drop your thoughts below!
