Maiya The Don just added a perfect mix of humor, thirst, and real talk to the ongoing UK vs US rap debate, and hip-hop Twitter can’t get enough.

The Brooklyn rapper weighed in on Skepta’s bold claim that UK artists are edging out their American counterparts—dropping a viral tweet that’s equal parts flirty and cutting.

“Skepta So Fine… But Delusional”

On Monday (July 7), Maiya The Don shared her thoughts with her 250K+ followers:

“Skepta so fine I’m willing to ignore the fact that he’s delusional enough to believe any UK rapper is better than our best rappers in the US.”

Fans React: “He Ain’t Even Better Than Our Worst Rappers”

As expected, hip-hop fans piled in with strong opinions.

  • “He ain’t even better than our worst rappers ????.”
  • “We invented this, let’s not get crazy.”
  • “UK rap has Central Cee, Skepta, Stormzy… don’t sleep.”

But Maiya surprised everyone by gently defending Skepta while still disagreeing with his assertion.

“Come on, man, not to be talking like this,” she tweeted, calling Skepta “talented” but not ready to put him—or any UK rapper—over America’s best.

Skepta Fires Shots at Joyner Lucas

The debate traces back to Skepta’s recent push to settle the UK/US rivalry with an actual lyrical clash.

“I wanna clash an American rapper anyway, finally get this UK/US rap debate sorted,” Skepta tweeted on July 3.

While A$AP Rocky—his Praise the Lord collaborator—has yet to respond, Joyner Lucas jumped into the conversation. Skepta dismissed Lucas in a fiery reply:

“I didn’t do all the work I did just for Joyner Lucas to be saying my name anyhow. I’ll let one of the young Gs handle him with ease.”

oh girl, he ain’t even better than our worst rappers.

Maiya Calls the Debate “So Fking Stupid”**

Maiya later took a step back from the playful back-and-forth to urge fans to keep perspective.

“This whole US vs UK conversation is so fking stupid,”** she wrote, adding that it distracts from bigger conversations about rap’s global evolution.

She argued that while UK artists often borrow from American styles, some—like Central Cee—are now outrapping many mainstream US rappers.

“They’re not better by default. They’re copying us, literally. Trends and sonics take longer to travel—that’s why they’re 10 years behind. That’s why they rap like it’s 2009—‘cause it literally is.”

UK vs US: Who’s Really Winning?

While Skepta and Maiya are keeping things playful (for now), the cultural conversation they’ve sparked is anything but light.

The UK’s grime and drill scenes have gained massive respect globally, with artists like Skepta, Stormzy, and Dave breaking through in America. At the same time, US rap remains the blueprint for modern hip-hop worldwide.

Fans Split on Twitter: “Bars Don’t Have Borders”

The discourse has fans arguing both sides:

  • “Skepta would wash half these American rappers y’all hype up.”
  • “Respectfully, UK rappers just don’t have that sauce.”
  • “Bars don’t have borders. It’s about who’s hungry.”

Could a Skepta vs US Rap Clash Actually Happen?

Whether a full-on lyrical clash materializes remains to be seen. But one thing’s clear: the culture is here for it.

For Maiya, the conversation started with a playful thirst tweet—but it’s grown into something much deeper about hip-hop’s global future.

???? Do you think Skepta could take on America’s best lyricists? And is Maiya The Don right about UK rap being “10 years behind”? Sound off below!
