John Goodman is finally sharing details about the painful injury that sidelined him earlier this year—and it turns out the situation was far more serious than fans realized.
The Roseanne legend, 73, says he suffered a hip fracture while filming an intense scene for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s upcoming untitled movie in the UK. And while Tom Cruise was nearby, Goodman’s legs gave out, sending him crashing to the floor in agony.

“I Couldn’t Get Up”
In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Goodman recounted the terrifying moment that halted production and landed him in the hospital.
“I’d just had a big breakthrough in the scene,” Goodman explained. “I was getting into position in my stocking feet, passed Tom, and suddenly my legs gave out. I hit the floor hard on my hip. When I tried to get up, I couldn’t.”
The incident happened in March at the iconic Pinewood Studios in England. Goodman said the on-set medic rushed over immediately and had him transported to a nearby hospital.
Emergency Surgery the Next Day
After undergoing X-rays, doctors confirmed Goodman had fractured his hip and required surgery the following day.
“I was worried they’d have to recast me,” Goodman admitted. “The thought of letting Alejandro and the crew down was worse than the pain.”
Forced to Sit Out for a Month
Following surgery, Goodman was sidelined for nearly a month while recovering. He described the downtime as torture for a man used to being on the move.
“I went stir-crazy,” he said. “But Alejandro and the crew were amazing—they kept shooting other scenes so I wouldn’t lose my spot.”
A Star-Studded Cast
Goodman wasn’t the only big name on set. The untitled film boasts a powerhouse cast, including Tom Cruise, Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
Back in Action
The good news? Goodman is now fully healed and back on set. With his trademark wit, he even joked about the ordeal:
“It’s the first time I’ve literally fallen for a role.”
Fans React to Goodman’s Return
Social media lit up with relief and admiration as news of Goodman’s recovery spread.
“John Goodman is unstoppable. So glad he’s okay and still giving us his best,” one fan posted on X.
