Brandon Blackstock, renowned talent manager and ex-husband of pop superstar Kelly Clarkson, has died at age 48 after bravely battling cancer for more than three years. His family confirmed the heartbreaking news, remembering him as a devoted father and industry professional.
“Brandon passed away peacefully, surrounded by family,” a family representative told PEOPLE. “We thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers and ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
A Beloved Father and Industry Insider
Blackstock was father to four children—Savannah and Seth from a previous marriage, and River, 11, and Remington, 9, with Clarkson. Before his passing, Clarkson shared on Instagram that Brandon had been seriously ill over the past year, prompting her to pause her Las Vegas residency to focus on their children.
“This past year, my children’s father has been ill, and I need to be fully present for them,” Clarkson wrote on August 6, expressing gratitude for fan support.
Savannah, Brandon’s eldest daughter, gave birth to a son named Lake in 2022, making Brandon a grandfather before his passing.

From Reba McEntire’s Stepson to Country and Pop Music Manager
Brandon’s connections in the music world ran deep. He was the stepson of legendary country singer Reba McEntire, whose marriage to Brandon’s father, Narvel Blackstock, lasted from 1989 to 2015. Narvel also managed Kelly Clarkson early in her career.
Brandon himself managed top country stars including Blake Shelton, and after marrying Clarkson in 2013, also served as her manager for a period. Clarkson has praised his talent and work ethic, telling Marie Claire in 2018:
“I wouldn’t have hired Brandon if I didn’t see how much he cares and how talented he is. He really thinks differently, and that’s why Blake’s career has exploded.”
The Couple’s Complex Relationship
Kelly Clarkson and Brandon met in 2006 and married seven years later. Their relationship inspired some of Clarkson’s most personal work—her 2015 hit “Piece By Piece” reflected the stability Brandon brought to her life, contrasting her own experiences with abandonment.
The couple separated in 2020 and finalized their divorce two years later. Clarkson candidly discussed the difficulty of their split, emphasizing the complexity and emotional weight behind it.
“Divorce isn’t an overnight decision. I wanted to make it beautiful, but sometimes it doesn’t work out that way,” she shared in 2023.
Remembering Brandon Blackstock
Brandon is survived by his children Savannah, Seth, River, and Remington; grandson Lake; father Narvel Blackstock; mother Elisa Gayle Ritter; and siblings Shelby, Shawna, and Chassidy.
Photos from family outings, such as their 2024 Houston Rodeo visit with Reba McEntire and family, reflect the close-knit bonds he treasured.

What Fans Are Saying
