Fans of horror and cult classics are mourning the loss of Lorna Raver, best known for terrifying audiences as Mrs. Sylvia Ganush in Sam Raimi’s 2009 hit Drag Me to Hell. Raver passed away on May 12, and her death was recently acknowledged in SAG-AFTRA’s Summer 2025 “In Memoriam” section. She was 81.
Her longtime agent, Michael Greene, fondly remembered her as a “beautiful lady” whose presence will continue to shine down from Heaven.
The Role That Cemented Her Legacy
Raver’s chilling portrayal of the vengeful old woman in Drag Me to Hell became an instant horror classic. According to Greene, Raver won the role over Anna Berger, another contender, because of her ability to perform the harness work required for Raimi’s special effects — a key part of the movie’s spine-tingling sequences.
The film went on to earn nearly $91 million worldwide, solidifying its status as a cult favorite. Raver herself admitted in a 2014 interview that she had no idea what the movie was about when she auditioned, but took the role because of her admiration for Raimi’s work.
“I didn’t fully understand what I was getting into, but Sam Raimi was incredible,” she once said.
Beyond Horror: TV and Audiobook Career
Raver’s career extended far beyond the horror genre. She had a recurring role on The Young and the Restless and made guest appearances on a string of popular shows, including:
- The Practice
- Ally McBeal
- Boston Legal
- Grey’s Anatomy
- Desperate Housewives
- Weeds
- Bones
In addition to her on-screen work, Raver was an acclaimed audiobook narrator, winning multiple Earphones Awards for her performances. Her voice work was celebrated for its clarity, range, and emotive power, making her a standout in the audiobook community.
Personal Life and Legacy
Raver was partnered for 25 years with radio writer-producer Yuri Rasovsky, who passed away in 2012. Outside of her career achievements, those close to her remember her for her warmth, professionalism, and dedication to her craft.
Her portrayal of Mrs. Ganush remains one of the most memorable horror performances of the 21st century, combining both physicality and spine-chilling menace. Fans of Drag Me to Hell will remember her cackling laugh, eerie stare, and relentless curse, which left audiences genuinely frightened — and thrilled.
