Mariah Carey is keeping fans on their toes. In a recent appearance for Pitchfork’s “Over/Under” segment, the pop icon shared candid opinions on everything from lab-grown diamonds to Crocs—but it was her take on the Grammy Awards that had everyone talking.
“I Think the Grammys Are Overrated”
Despite her legendary career, which includes 34 Grammy nominations and 5 wins, Carey didn’t hold back. “I think the Grammys are overrated,” she told Pitchfork, adding a warm qualifier: “But we love everybody.” Her statement highlights Carey’s signature blend of honesty, charm, and humor, reminding fans that even music royalty can question the industry’s most prestigious accolades.
New Album Tease
While talking to Pitchfork, Carey also dropped hints about her highly anticipated new album. During a recent interview marking the 10th anniversary of Apple Music with Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden, the “Always Be My Baby” singer shared:
“I’m trying not to tell too much about the new album. It’s a special occasion / Mimi’s emancipation—that’s a lyric from one of my songs. What is next? The album is coming out.”
She emphasized that while the project is finished, she’s keeping details under wraps to preserve the excitement.
“Type Dangerous” Sets the Tone
Fans have already gotten a taste of Carey’s latest sound with her newest single, “Type Dangerous.” Describing the track as a “heavy record” with “real weight,” Carey teased that more Mariah ballads are on the way.
A second single is expected soon, and Carey hinted at its summery vibe and catchy beat. “I like the beat as well,” she shared, signaling a blend of nostalgia and modern flair.
A Nod to Hip-Hop History
“Type Dangerous” also includes a sample from Eric B. and Rakim’s classic 1986 single, “Eric B. Is President.” Carey performed the song with Rakim at the 2025 BET Awards, sharing the story behind the collaboration:
“I’ve always loved ‘Eric B. Is President.’ It wasn’t something like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna flip this’—I just wouldn’t think of doing it. But then we were in this restaurant in Aspen, and they had different music on, and they played ‘Eric B. Is President,’ and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! I love this song!’ We ended up in the studio a couple months later and we did it.”
The performance and single mark an exciting new chapter for Carey, merging her signature vocals with a classic hip-hop influence, and teasing fans about the range of sounds her upcoming album will explore.
Why Fans Are Buzzing
With the Grammys off her list of priorities and new music on the horizon, Mariah Carey is proving that her focus is on creative freedom rather than accolades. From thought-provoking interviews to nostalgic yet innovative singles, the superstar continues to redefine her legendary career.
