The sudden death of David Hekili Kenui Bell, beloved for his role in “Lilo & Stitch,” has left fans and family devastated. Now, the actor’s autopsy report offers a clearer — and heartbreaking — look into what happened before his untimely passing at just 46 years old.
Obtained by PEOPLE, the autopsy was issued by the Hawaii Police Department more than two months after Bell died on June 12 on Hawaii’s Big Island. The report lists four major medical conditions contributing to his death:
- Acute respiratory failure
- Sepsis
- Hypertensive/atherosclerotic heart disease
- Morbid obesity
Emergency Efforts Tried to Save Him
The report details that emergency crews did everything possible to save Bell’s life. At the scene, he had defibrillator pads on his chest, an airway in place, IV access, and even an intraosseous needle in his leg — a method used to deliver fluids and medications when traditional IVs aren’t possible.
Despite these heroic efforts, Bell tragically passed away.

Other Findings from the Autopsy
The autopsy also revealed additional medical issues that may have impacted Bell’s health:
- Stasis dermatitis – a skin condition caused by poor circulation
- Edema – swelling in the lower limbs due to fluid buildup
Importantly, toxicology tests came back clean, showing no evidence of drugs or alcohol.
Family Remembers a Beloved Brother
Bell’s sister, Jalene, first shared the devastating news in a heartfelt Facebook post back in June. She described him as “a generous, funny, brilliant, and handsome little brother” who gave her unconditional love, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Fans of the “Lilo & Stitch” star have been sharing messages of support and mourning the sudden loss, highlighting the impact Bell had on Disney fans worldwide.
Understanding the Diagnoses
- Atherosclerosis: Fatty deposits clog arteries, restricting blood flow and potentially leading to clots.
- Hypertensive heart disease: High blood pressure damages the heart over time.
- Sepsis: A life-threatening response to infection that can cause organ failure.
- Morbid obesity: Severe obesity that increases risk for heart disease, respiratory issues, and other complications.
Medical experts note that a combination of these conditions can escalate quickly, sometimes with little warning, which aligns with the sudden nature of Bell’s passing.
