Jason Collins, the NBA trailblazer and the league’s first openly gay player, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor and is currently undergoing treatment, the NBA confirmed Thursday.
In a statement released on behalf of Collins and his family, the league asked fans to send positive thoughts and support during this difficult time.
“Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as they dedicate their attention to Jason’s health and well-being,” the NBA said.
No additional details regarding the tumor or treatment plan have been shared publicly.

A Storied NBA Career
Collins, 46, was selected 18th overall in the 2001 NBA Draft and spent his early years with the New Jersey Nets until 2008. The 7-foot center also played for the Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, and Washington Wizards during his 13-year NBA career.
He returned to the Nets franchise when it relocated to Brooklyn, wearing jersey No. 98 to honor Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old man who was brutally murdered in Wyoming in 1998 because of his sexual orientation.
“When I put on my jersey, I was making a statement to myself, my family, and my friends,” Collins said of the tribute, reflecting his commitment to LGBTQ+ advocacy.
Collins retired in November 2014, leaving behind a legacy not just for his basketball achievements, but for his courage in breaking barriers in professional sports.
Breaking Barriers and Earning Support
In 2013, Collins made history by coming out as gay while still an active NBA player. His announcement made national headlines, and he received overwhelming support from teammates, other NBA stars including Kobe Bryant, and then-commissioner David Stern.
His bravery opened doors for conversations about LGBTQ+ inclusion in professional sports, inspiring countless athletes and fans around the world.
Personal Life and Marriage
Outside of basketball, Collins recently celebrated a major milestone in his personal life. He married longtime partner Brunson Green, a film producer, in May, marking a joyful moment amid a challenging year.
Friends, fans, and the NBA community have rallied behind Collins and his family, sending messages of love and encouragement as he begins treatment for the brain tumor.

The outpouring of support highlights the impact Collins has had both on and off the court. From advocating for LGBTQ+ rights to representing courage and authenticity in the NBA, his influence extends far beyond basketball.
