The Combs family just scored a legal win. A federal judge in California has officially dismissed a RICO lawsuit brought against Janice Smalls Combs, the mother of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs.
On September 19, Judge Percy Anderson of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California ruled in favor of Smalls Combs, shutting down all federal racketeering allegations and closing the case in her favor.
The Lawsuit That Sparked Headlines
The case was filed by Deon Best — who also goes by Deon D1 Best — a figure in the entertainment industry operating under the business names Finish Line Entertainment and Dee Mac Music.
Best accused the Combs family of multiple legal violations, citing the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) as well as a string of state law claims. He attempted to tie Smalls Combs, Sean Combs, and related publishing companies to alleged misconduct.
Judge Shuts Down Federal Claims
In his ruling, Judge Anderson dismissed the federal RICO claims with prejudice, meaning they cannot be refiled. This was a critical blow to Best’s case, as RICO suits are notoriously difficult to prove and require a high standard of evidence.
The judge also dismissed Best’s state law claims without prejudice, leaving the door open for him to potentially pursue them in California state court. Still, legal observers — and many Combs supporters — believe that outcome is unlikely.
The official judgment stated that Best “shall take nothing” from the lawsuit, while Smalls Combs and her publishing companies — Janice Combs Publishing, LLC, and Janice Combs Publishing Holdings, Inc. — are entitled to recover legal costs.
What This Means for the Combs Family
The dismissal comes as a major relief for the Combs family, who have faced months of headlines tied to ongoing lawsuits and allegations involving Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Legal experts say the ruling underscores just how challenging it is to successfully bring RICO cases in federal court. Without clear evidence of organized criminal activity, most claims fail to move forward.
For Smalls Combs, the decision clears her of serious accusations that could have carried reputational damage despite lacking courtroom merit.
No Statements Yet From Either Side
So far, neither Janice Smalls Combs nor Deon Best has made a public statement about the dismissal. However, sources close to the Combs legal team signaled quiet satisfaction, calling the outcome a “complete and decisive win.”
Best, on the other hand, still has the option of pursuing some of his claims in state court, though it remains to be seen whether he will take that route.
A Win Amid a Wave of Scrutiny
This legal victory is significant, especially given the broader public scrutiny surrounding the Combs family. Sean “Diddy” Combs has faced multiple lawsuits in recent years, and any case tied to his name inevitably draws national attention.
But in this instance, the court made it clear: Janice Smalls Combs and her companies are walking away without liability, their reputations intact — and with their legal costs covered.
