A Florida A&M University band announcer is facing serious backlash after making a body-shaming joke at the expense of Alabama State University dancers during Saturday’s football game. The controversial comment, which referenced weight-loss drug Ozempic, has sparked outrage on social media and prompted a formal apology from the university.
The incident occurred during halftime of the FAMU vs. ASU matchup at Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida. As Alabama State’s Honey Beez dance team completed their performance, announcer Joe Bullard reportedly took to the microphone and quipped:
“Congratulate them, they’re now the new face of Ozempic.”
Video footage from the scene shows audible disapproval from the crowd, with many attendees reacting negatively to the comment.

FAMU Issues Apology
FAMU President Marva Johnson quickly addressed the situation, labeling Bullard’s remarks as “inappropriate” and “offensive.” In a statement, she emphasized the university’s commitment to accountability:
“Florida A&M University is taking immediate steps to ensure accountability within our organization and to prevent incidents like this in the future.”
Johnson also reaffirmed FAMU’s dedication to upholding the dignity and excellence expected from all HBCU institutions:
“We remain committed to upholding the dignity and excellence that all HBCU institutions bring to the field, the classroom, and the community.”
About Joe Bullard
Bullard, a FAMU alum, has been the voice of the Marching 100 since 1975. He was inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame in 2010 and the National Black Radio Hall of Fame in 2022. His status with FAMU following the incident has not yet been confirmed.
Known for his decades-long career as a celebrated announcer, this controversy marks a rare public misstep in his longstanding tenure at the university.
Social Media Reacts
Fans and social media users were quick to voice their disgust over Bullard’s comments. Clips of the halftime show circulated widely, drawing criticism from both ASU supporters and HBCU community members who called the joke “disrespectful and harmful.”
Many highlighted that professional sports and entertainment settings should foster respect and inclusivity, not perpetuate body-shaming or disparaging remarks.
Looking Ahead
As the university investigates the incident, it remains to be seen whether Bullard will face disciplinary action. FAMU has assured the public that steps will be taken to prevent future incidents, signaling a commitment to accountability and institutional integrity.
