Former Vice President Bukenya Criticizes Government’s Approach to Supporting Artists

Professor Gilbert Balibaseka Bukenya, Uganda’s former Vice President, has publicly criticized the government’s approach to supporting the country’s artists. He condemned the practice of handing out cash gifts to musicians, arguing that this method is ineffective and unsustainable.

Focus on Sustainable Support Systems

According to Bukenya, instead of dishing out cash handouts, the government should invest in creating and developing proper venues and infrastructure for artists.

“The government should have helped artists by establishing or developing a space where artists could hold shows and concerts rather than giving them cash handouts because it is all useless,” he stated.

Bukenya believes that providing artists with professional spaces and working conditions would enable them to earn their income independently without relying on government support.

Criticism of the Uganda National Musicians Federation

The former Vice President also questioned the necessity of the recently established Uganda National Musicians Federation. He described the initiative as unnecessary and suggested that Uganda should instead focus on creating federations that foster collaboration with East African and African markets.

“The musicians’ federation that was set up is fake because a musician comes and goes. Uganda only needs a federation that unites East Africa and Africa at large,” he argued.

Call for Humility Among Artists

In addition to his critique of government initiatives, Bukenya urged musicians to adopt a more humble and professional attitude. He condemned what he described as a culture of bragging and inappropriate behavior among some artists.

“Musicians should be gentle and humble so that when they earn money, they can focus on making wise investments. But not this business of bragging around, wearing security camouflage uniform, and having hair that looks like it was gotten from someone who had been buried long ago,” he remarked.

Addressing Mediocrity in the Industry

Bukenya did not shy away from commenting on the chaos and infighting that have plagued Uganda’s music industry. He dismissed the recent controversies among musicians as a reflection of mediocrity and called for artists to strive for long-term success rather than short-lived fame.

Conclusion

Professor Gilbert Bukenya’s candid remarks serve as a wake-up call for both the government and the entertainment industry. His call for sustainable support systems and greater professionalism among artists underscores the need for a more cohesive and forward-thinking approach to the development of Uganda’s music scene.

As debates around these issues continue, one thing remains clear: the future of Uganda’s music industry depends on strategic investments, collaboration, and a commitment to fostering both talent and professionalism.
