Celebrated Ugandan songstress Naava Grey has set the record straight regarding the speculation surrounding her relationship with Sony Music Entertainment Africa. In a recent interview, Naava dismissed claims that her deal with Sony contributed to her slowed musical output and career setbacks in recent years.

The Sony Music Deal: Setting the Record Straight

Back in 2013, Naava Grey made headlines when she signed a publishing and distribution deal with Sony Music Entertainment Africa and Rockstar 4000 Music Entertainment. The deal, focused on her single “Sokalami,” was hailed as a significant milestone for her career. However, as the years progressed, critics pointed fingers at Sony, alleging that the deal hindered her music career.

Addressing these allegations, Naava clarified the nature of her agreement with Sony, emphasizing that it was limited to a single song. “I do not blame Sony. Why should I blame Sony really? We only signed a publishing and distribution partnership with Sony for just one song, Sokalami,” she stated.

Sony Delivered on Its Promise

Naava praised Sony for fulfilling their end of the bargain, which included ensuring that “Sokalami” was distributed across the African continent upon its release. “The song was distributed in every country in Africa the day it was premiered,” she noted. Additionally, she highlighted the exposure she gained through the partnership, which allowed her to collaborate with renowned artists from across the continent.

Collaborations and Growth

Through her connection with Sony, Naava managed to work with several African stars. She revealed that while some of these collaborations remain unreleased, she worked with artists from Senegal and Namibia. “We kept in touch. I partnered with them in such a way that whenever I needed an artist, they would connect me,” she explained.

The Decision Not to Sign Fully

Naava’s decision not to enter into a more binding contract with Sony was a calculated one. “I didn’t sign those binding contracts expecting them to do everything for me. I was warned not to sign fully with them,” she disclosed, indicating her understanding of the potential limitations of such agreements.

The Bigger Picture

Despite the slowdown in her music releases, Naava Grey remains a respected figure in the Ugandan music scene. Her reflections on the Sony deal highlight the complexities of navigating the music industry, especially for African artists seeking international exposure. Her ability to maintain creative control and make independent decisions has been crucial to her artistic journey.

What’s Next for Naava Grey?

While Naava did not reveal specific details about upcoming projects, her acknowledgment of unreleased collaborations hints at exciting prospects for her fans. As she continues to evolve as an artist, Naava’s focus on staying true to her craft and maintaining her independence remains unwavering.

Conclusion

Naava Grey’s clarification about her deal with Sony Music Entertainment dispels the long-standing narrative that the partnership hindered her career. Instead, her story underscores the importance of understanding and managing expectations in the competitive music industry. Fans can look forward to more from the talented songstress, whose resilience and passion continue to shine.
