The tragic death of De’Martravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old Black student at Delta State University, has shaken the campus community and reignited calls for transparency in law enforcement investigations.
The Mississippi Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Reed’s cause of death as hanging and classified it as a suicide, while toxicology results are still pending. Reed’s body was discovered early Monday, September 15, near the university’s pickleball courts.
The Bolivar County Coroner’s Office conducted an initial on-site review and reported no signs of foul play — no lacerations, contusions, broken bones, or injuries suggesting assault.
Conflicting Reports Deepen Family Concerns
Despite the official findings, Reed’s family and legal team have raised concerns over conflicting information. Attorneys claim authorities initially told them that Reed was found dead inside his dorm room, creating confusion over the actual circumstances.
“The family does not know exactly what happened on Sept. 15,” said family attorney Vanessa J. Jones.
“We are seeking answers.”
Reed’s grandfather, J.B. Reed, shared his distress at being told the news:
“He didn’t even say possible suicide,” Reed recalled. “He said suicide.”
Federal Review and Calls for Transparency
The Cleveland Police Department confirmed that all investigative materials have been turned over to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for federal review. Chief Travis Tribble acknowledged the existence of video evidence but withheld further details due to the ongoing investigation.
“Our thoughts remain with Reed’s family and friends during this very difficult time. We encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for help,” Tribble said in a statement.
Attorneys representing the family, including civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, are demanding that Delta State University release all footage connected to the investigation. Crump stressed the importance of transparency for both Reed’s loved ones and the wider campus community:
“His family and the campus community deserve a full, independent investigation to uncover the truth about what happened,” Crump said.
“We cannot accept vague conclusions when so many questions remain.”
Campus and Community Impact
Reed’s death has had a profound impact on students, faculty, and local residents in Cleveland, Mississippi. It has sparked renewed debate over:
- Transparency in law enforcement investigations
- Mental health resources for college students
- Universities’ responsibilities to communicate clearly during crises
Many on social media and campus forums have expressed grief, frustration, and solidarity with Reed’s family, calling for accountability and a thorough review of campus policies and safety measures.
Next Steps
As federal authorities review the case, Reed’s family continues to advocate for answers and accountability. The release of video evidence and investigative records could shed light on the circumstances surrounding his death.
For the Delta State community, the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of mental health support, transparency, and safety on college campuses.
Trey Reed’s family and legal team vow to continue the fight for clarity and justice, ensuring that his death is fully understood and responsibly addressed.
