Bobby Portis Faces 25-Game Suspension for Testing Positive for Tramadol: “An Honest Mistake”

The Mix-Up with Tramadol and ToradolThe Impact of the Suspension on the Milwaukee BucksNo Appeal from PortisKey Takeaways:

Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis has been handed a significant penalty by the NBA, receiving a 25-game suspension for violating the league’s anti-drug policy. The suspension, which will sideline Portis for the majority of the remainder of the season, stems from a positive test for tramadol, a pain medication that is now prohibited under the NBA’s updated substance list.

Portis’ agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, explained to ESPN that the violation was the result of an honest mistake. According to Bartelstein, Portis mistakenly took tramadol, thinking it was Toradol, a pain medication commonly used by athletes for pain and inflammation. “I am devastated for Bobby right now because he made an honest mistake and the ramifications of it are incredibly significant,” Bartelstein said.

The Mix-Up with Tramadol and Toradol

The confusion occurred when Portis took a tramadol pill that was provided by an assistant with a valid prescription for the drug. Portis was told it was Toradol, a medication he has used in the past to manage pain. Tramadol, however, is not approved for use in the NBA and was added to the banned substance list earlier this year.

“It was an honest mistake because of the similarity in the names of the drugs,” Bartelstein explained. “Both medications serve a very similar purpose — to alleviate pain and inflammation, which Bobby was dealing with due to an elbow injury he sustained last fall.” The error came just before a game in which Portis was hoping to use the medication to prepare his body for the physical demands of the game.

The Impact of the Suspension on the Milwaukee Bucks

Portis’ suspension represents a major blow to the Milwaukee Bucks as they fight for playoff positioning. The team is currently in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, and Portis has been a crucial part of their lineup. Averaging 13.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, Portis is not only the team’s top reserve player, but he also ranks sixth in scoring and second in rebounding among all bench players in the league.

Portis’ role as a key contributor was vital to the Bucks’ 2021 NBA Championship victory, where his energy and scoring off the bench were instrumental. His absence will leave a significant void in the team’s rotation, especially as they look to secure a higher seed heading into the playoffs.

No Appeal from Portis

Despite the circumstances surrounding the suspension, Portis will not be appealing the decision. Bartelstein reiterated that the situation was a mistake and that Portis deeply regrets the oversight. The suspension will keep Portis out of action until the All-Star break is over, with his return scheduled for April 8, when the Bucks face the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Key Takeaways:

  • Bobby Portis has been suspended for 25 games by the NBA for a positive test for tramadol, which was mistakenly taken in place of the approved pain medication Toradol.
  • Portis’ agent, Mark Bartelstein, stated that the incident was an honest mistake caused by the similarity in the names and purposes of the two drugs.
  • The suspension is a major setback for the Milwaukee Bucks, who are currently ranked fifth in the Eastern Conference and rely heavily on Portis’ performance off the bench.
  • Portis will not appeal the suspension and will be eligible to return on April 8 against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
