Chance the Rapper and his wife, Kirsten Corley, are officially ending their marriage after five years. According to TMZ, Corley filed for divorce on Friday, December 13th, marking the end of their union just months after celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary. The couple, who share two daughters, Kensli (9) and Marli (5), had previously announced their separation in April, emphasizing their shared commitment to co-parenting.
A Marriage Marked by Highs and Lows
The decision comes after years of navigating challenges together. Last year, Chance, born Chancelor Bennett, faced backlash after a video from Jamaica’s Carnival showed him dancing provocatively with another woman. The clip, which also featured Chance smacking the woman’s backside, sparked controversy online. Shortly after, Corley shared a cryptic Maya Angelou quote on Instagram about people who “don’t grow up,” fueling speculation that the post was aimed at her husband.
Despite the incident, sources at the time reported that the couple had worked through the issue. However, their separation earlier this year hinted at deeper struggles in their relationship.
Joint Statement on Separation
In April, the pair announced their separation with matching statements on Instagram Stories, writing:
“After a period of separation, the two of us have arrived at the decision to part ways. We came to this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together. God has blessed us with two beautiful daughters who we will continue to raise together. We kindly ask for privacy and respect as we navigate this transition. Thank you.”
Reflecting on Their Journey
This isn’t the first time the couple has opened up about the complexities of their marriage. In a now-deleted 2020 Instagram post, Corley candidly described marriage as “difficult” and spoke about the importance of personal growth and commitment.
Despite their struggles, their relationship was often celebrated in Chance’s music. His debut album, The Big Day, was a love letter to Corley, highlighting their deep bond. The two first met as children at Chance’s mother’s office party, and their love story has been one of growth, challenges, and shared memories.
Now, as they choose separate paths, both Chance and Corley remain focused on raising their daughters together.
