This December, music icon Ciara and NFL star Russell Wilson will join forces to produce an inspiring new film about Sarah Rector, America’s first Black female millionaire — a groundbreaking story of faith, fortune, and fierce resilience.
Through their production company, Why Not You Productions, the power couple is set to shine a spotlight on Rector’s remarkable journey in Sarah’s Oil. The film draws inspiration from Tonya Bolden’s acclaimed book, Searching for Sarah Rector: The Richest Black Girl in America, chronicling the true-life story of an 11-year-old girl who struck oil on her Oklahoma land, changing history forever.
The Story Behind Sarah’s Oil
Born in Oklahoma Indian Territory in the early 1900s, Sarah Rector was gifted a plot of “barren land” that she believed held hidden treasure beneath its surface. Her faith was soon rewarded when oil was discovered, making her a millionaire at just 11 years old. But the film doesn’t shy away from the challenges: as greedy oil sharks circle, Sarah must rely on her family, friends, and rugged Texas wildcatters to protect her valuable land and legacy.
Star-Studded Cast & Production Team
Starring Zachary Levi and Naya Desir-Johnson as the film’s leads, Sarah’s Oil boasts an impressive supporting cast, including:
- Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery)
- Garret Dillahunt (Raising Hope)
- Bridget Regan (Jane the Virgin)
- Kenric Green (The Walking Dead)

- Stelio Savante (The Cleaning Lady)
- Mel Rodriguez (The Last Man on Earth)
Executive producers alongside Ciara and Russell Wilson include Sherry Kang (Wyldwood), Tony Young and Katelyn Botsch (Kingdom Story Company), and Robert Scott Fort.
