Dame Dash is opening up about his lingering disappointment with Grammy-winning singer John Legend for choosing Sony over Roc-A-Fella Records during the early days of his career. Speaking on The Art of Dialogue, the Roc-A-Fella co-founder revealed details about Legend’s career trajectory and his connection to Kanye West.
“John Legend was supposed to be Roc-A-Fella,” Dash stated. “I took him on tour. I wouldn’t have spent money to take John around the world with Kanye, letting him sing before Kanye performed, unless I believed he was signing with Roc-A-Fella. But he did some sneaky shit and went to Sony instead.”
From Roc-A-Fella to G.O.O.D. Music
Although John Legend didn’t join Roc-A-Fella, his relationship with Kanye West remained intact. Legend became the first artist signed to West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint, releasing his critically acclaimed debut album, Get Lifted, in 2004 through a joint venture with Sony. The partnership proved fruitful, resulting in five more albums between 2004 and 2016.
However, the professional and personal connection between the two artists eventually soured. Their fallout came to public light during Kanye’s controversial 2020 presidential campaign.
Political Differences and Fallout
In a 2022 interview with The New Yorker, John Legend addressed the breakdown of his friendship with Kanye, countering earlier claims that it was due to Kanye’s support for Donald Trump.
“It was framed as if we stopped being friends because he supported Trump, but that’s not accurate,” Legend explained. He suggested the real issue stemmed from his endorsement of Joe Biden over Kanye. “He was very upset I didn’t support him running for president. That’s what caused the strain in our friendship. I don’t know what the future holds, but it’s up to him whether he moves past it.”
Kanye had his own perspective, which he shared during a 2021 appearance on Drink Champs. He accused both Legend and fellow artist Big Sean of turning against him during his campaign. “When I ran for office, John Legend and Big Sean got used by the Democrats to come at their boy—the one who actually changed their lives. That’s some sell-out shit. I don’t rock with either of them anymore,” Kanye said.
A Glimpse into Industry Loyalties
Dash’s revelations about John Legend’s potential Roc-A-Fella ties add another layer to the intricate dynamics of Kanye’s relationships within the music industry. The story highlights the shifting loyalties and fractured connections that have marked Kanye’s journey, from his early days as a Roc-A-Fella producer to his status as a global icon.
For fans, it’s a reminder of the complexities behind two of music’s most influential figures—Kanye West and John Legend—and the moments that shaped their careers and personal relationships.
