Grammy-winning superstar Doja Cat is making waves with her decision to return to her pop roots on her upcoming fifth album, Vie.
In an exclusive interview with V Magazine, Doja opened up about embracing pop music again after a period of distancing herself from the genre.
“I do want to be self-aware enough to admit the fact that this is a pop-driven project,” she shared candidly.
“Pop is just that—it’s popular. But sometimes people view it as a sport for girls and gays, not as music, which is wild.”
🎤 Vocal Growth and New Sounds
Doja also revealed that during the creation of Vie, she honed her vocal abilities like never before.
“Sometimes I’m surprised by what I can do now because I could not f**king sing… I have a lot more knowledge of how to use my voice as an instrument than ever before.”
Fans can expect a new level of vocal artistry layered into her signature style on this highly anticipated project.
🔥 From ‘Scarlet’ to ‘Vie’: A Shift Back to Mainstream
Doja’s previous album, Scarlet (September 2023), took a darker, more experimental turn, straying from the pop sound that initially shot her to fame.
Back in April 2023, she tweeted that pop music was no longer “exciting” to her, prompting her to explore nostalgic, lo-fi sounds that subtly hinted at ‘80s influences without being overt.
“I wanted to play with nostalgia by using Lo-Fi sounds and samples that reminded you of your childhood, but it wasn’t on the nose ’80s,” Doja explained.
