Travis Kazibwe, popularly known as Dr. Tee, has made a passionate appeal to the Ugandan government and relevant authorities to provide creatives with land where they can establish a dedicated film-making estate. The singer-songwriter and record producer, now an active player in the local film industry, expressed his vision for a thriving Ugandan movie sector that nurtures homegrown talent and strengthens the entertainment industry.
A Bold Vision for Uganda’s Film Industry
Dr. Tee envisions a hub for creatives where filmmakers, actors, and musicians can collaborate to produce world-class content. Unlike the common expectation for financial grants or infrastructure development, he believes that simply having access to land is enough to get the industry moving in the right direction.
“I urge the government to allocate us land as creatives so that we establish a creative film-making estate. I am ready and willing to run it because we currently only need land, not buildings, to get started.”
According to Dr. Tee, the estate would become a central location for film production, providing opportunities for both established and emerging artists to access the resources they need to succeed. By fostering a supportive environment, this initiative could elevate Uganda’s entertainment industry to international standards.
Empowering Rising Stars in Music and Film
Dr. Tee emphasized the estate’s potential to support not only filmmakers but also musicians and rising stars in the entertainment sector. With dedicated media houses within the estate, up-and-coming artists would benefit from increased airplay and exposure, giving them a fighting chance in a competitive industry.
He specifically mentioned two promising Ugandan artists, Grenade Official and Liam Voice, as examples of talents who could thrive with the right support.
“I have a list of rising artists that I believe could make it to the top level if they get the right platform, including Grenade Official and Liam Voice. With an estate dedicated to creatives, we can nurture and promote such talents effectively.”
A Long-Overdue Investment in Uganda’s Entertainment Sector
Despite Uganda’s rich pool of creative talent, the entertainment industry still faces major challenges, including limited funding, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of government support. Dr. Tee’s proposal seeks to bridge this gap by creating a self-sustaining ecosystem where artists can freely create, collaborate, and distribute their work.
The benefits of a creative film-making estate extend beyond just entertainment. If implemented, it could lead to:
- Job creation for filmmakers, actors, editors, and technicians.
- Increased tourism by attracting film productions and events.
- Cultural preservation through storytelling and artistic expression.
- Economic growth as the film and music industry contribute more to the GDP.
A Call to Action for Authorities and Stakeholders
Dr. Tee’s plea comes at a time when Ugandan creatives continue to seek better opportunities to showcase their work on global platforms. The government and private investors have a chance to play a pivotal role in fostering innovation and creativity by supporting such initiatives.
As the conversation around Uganda’s entertainment industry grows, will the government heed Dr. Tee’s call and make history by establishing the country’s first-ever creative film-making estate? Only time will tell, but the ball is now in their court.
