New York City Mayor Eric Adams has made his stance crystal clear: he cannot support legalizing prostitution. Drawing from his past experience as a police officer and his Christian faith, Adams explained his opposition during an interview airing Thursday.
Unlike his mayoral opponent Zohran Mamdani, who has expressed support for legalization, Adams says the issue hits close to home based on what he witnessed on the streets of NYC.
Memories From the Streets
Adams recalls seeing young men as young as 18 or 19 selling their bodies, a reality that left a lasting impression. He also points to the role prostitution played in contributing to the AIDS epidemic during those years.
“I can’t support turning this into a normalized job for young people. It’s exploitative, dangerous, and it perpetuates violence,” Adams said.
No Faith in Red-Light Districts
When asked about the idea of a red-light district, similar to Amsterdam’s model, Adams dismissed it as a solution.
“Even designated spaces don’t eliminate the exploitation or violence linked to prostitution,” he said.
Adams’ position makes it clear he doesn’t want to treat sex work as a viable occupation for young people, and he is committed to opposing any policies that might encourage it.
A Faith-Based Argument
Beyond his police experience, Adams also cited his Christian faith as a guiding principle in shaping his views. He took a subtle jab at Mamdani, questioning how someone who identifies as a practicing Muslim could support legalizing prostitution while claiming religious grounding.
NYC Mayoral Race Heating Up
The comments come as the NYC mayoral race heats up, with Adams, Mamdani, and former Governor Andrew Cuomo — running as an independent — vying for the city’s top position. Adams is clearly positioning himself as a values-driven candidate, making his views on hot-button issues like prostitution unmistakably known.
The debate over sex work legalization is expected to become a major point of contention as campaigns continue and voters weigh the candidates’ moral and policy stances.
