Former Miss Uganda Oliver Nakakande has opened up about the challenges she faced during her two-year reign, which coincided with the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nakakande, who held the title during an unprecedented period of global uncertainty, described her time as Miss Uganda as both rewarding and emotionally taxing.

A Reign Marked by Uncertainty

Nakakande, crowned Miss Uganda just before the pandemic struck, earned the nickname “pandemic queen” due to the unique circumstances that defined her tenure. With the world under lockdown and public gatherings restricted, her role as Miss Uganda was significantly impacted, limiting her ability to fulfill the traditional responsibilities associated with the title.

“It was tough! I became the ‘pandemic queen’ because my reign was hit by COVID and was put on a standstill. Society, however, still had very high expectations of me,” Nakakande shared.

Achievements Despite the Challenges

Despite the obstacles, Nakakande made notable strides during her reign. She fostered a strong sisterhood with other contestants from the Miss World competition, highlighting the importance of unity and collaboration even in challenging times.

Additionally, she leveraged digital platforms to engage with audiences. Nakakande hosted Instagram sessions focusing on mental health and other important discussions, providing a sense of connection and support during the isolation of the lockdown period.

“I spent a lot of time with my family and carried out Instagram sessions about mental health, among other important discussions,” she recounted, emphasizing the importance of adapting to the constraints of the pandemic.

Battling High Expectations and Public Criticism

Nakakande candidly revealed the toll her reign took on her mental health. The public’s high expectations, coupled with the limitations of the pandemic, left her feeling overwhelmed and emotionally drained.

“I went through deep depression during that time. There was so much going on, and I felt like my potential was shrinking. I couldn’t do anything to put myself out there, yet the world demanded more of me,” she said.

Her reign also attracted criticism from some quarters, which only added to the pressure she faced. However, Nakakande’s resilience and determination helped her navigate these challenges, emerging stronger and more self-aware.

Lessons and Reflections

Looking back on her reign, Nakakande acknowledges the unique lessons she learned during the pandemic. The experience taught her the value of adaptability, self-care, and staying connected with her values and purpose, even in the face of adversity.

Her advocacy for mental health and her openness about her struggles have resonated with many, inspiring conversations about the importance of addressing emotional well-being, especially during challenging times.

Public Support and Encouragement

Nakakande’s candid reflections have drawn admiration from fans and supporters who praised her for sharing her journey.

One fan wrote, “Oliver Nakakande is a true queen. Her reign may have been tough, but she handled it with grace and courage.”
