A Shocking Loss

Law enforcement sources indicate that emergency responders arrived at the scene around 10:30 AM following a report from an assistant who discovered Baena. Authorities have confirmed that he died by suicide and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Storied Career in Film

Baena’s career began after earning a film degree from New York University and moving to Los Angeles to pursue his passion for filmmaking. Initially, he worked in lower-level roles for renowned directors such as Robert Zemeckis and David O. Russell. His collaboration with Russell proved pivotal, as the two co-wrote four screenplays, including the acclaimed I Heart Huckabees starring Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin.

Baena’s directorial debut came in 2014 with the horror-comedy Life After Beth, which starred John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, and his longtime partner, Aubrey Plaza. He went on to direct Joshy (2016), The Little Hours (2017), and Horse Girl (2020), solidifying his reputation as a filmmaker with a unique voice and vision.

Personal Life

In 2021, Aubrey Plaza revealed that she and Baena had married after over a decade of dating. Plaza, best known for her breakout role in Parks and Recreation and more recent successes like Emily the Criminal and The White Lotus, often collaborated with Baena on his projects. Their creative partnership was as strong as their personal bond.
