Gabrielle Union is shifting her perspective on the 50/50 financial arrangement she previously maintained with her husband, retired NBA star Dwyane Wade.
The actress initially stood firm on splitting expenses equally with Wade, as she revealed on the Black Millionaires podcast in 2023.
“In this household, we split everything fifty-fifty,” Union explained at the time, admitting that she still struggles with a “scarcity mindset” stemming from her early years as an up-and-coming actress.
Gabrielle Union’s Shift in Perspective
However, after a breakthrough in therapy, Union has reconsidered her stance, acknowledging that her 50/50 philosophy was more about fear than fairness. Speaking on the Balanced Black Girl podcast, she described it as a “trauma response.”
“I famously said, ‘50/50 or bust,’” she shared. “And I meant that financially, spiritually, and emotionally. But there are days when I only have 10 percent, and I need him to be 90 percent. There are days when I have nothing, and I need him to be 100 percent.”
The Emotional Toll of 50/50
Union revealed that her fear of full financial dependence led her to resist vulnerability in their marriage.
“50/50 is, ‘I’m not going to be vulnerable enough to trust you with 100 percent of anything’—not my heart, not my cash,” she admitted.
One of her most challenging moments came when Wade asked her to take over their mortgage payments.
“I was physically shaking and weeping profusely,” she recalled. “I thought I was about to die. And he was like, ‘You insisted on that. I thought it made you feel better.’ And I was like, ‘It did, and right now, I want to take it back.’”
A Stronger Bond
Despite the initial anxiety, Union said this shift has strengthened their relationship.
“Because he knows it’s not about whether he can afford it,” she explained. “It’s about being vulnerable enough, being open enough, to know that I’m okay. I’m okay as his wife. He’s okay as my husband. I’m okay in this family.”
