A tense and deadly standoff unfolded Monday morning in McAllen, Texas, when a heavily armed man clad in tactical gear attempted to ambush law enforcement officers as they arrived for work at a U.S. Border Patrol facility.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the gunman—identified as 27-year-old Ryan Louis Mosqueda of Michigan—opened fire at the entrance of a Border Patrol sector annex. The attack sparked a chaotic gun battle that left Mosqueda dead after officers and Border Patrol agents returned fire.
🚨 Deadly Shooting Leaves Three Injured
The exchange of gunfire resulted in injuries to:
- Two law enforcement officers
- One U.S. Border Patrol employee
One officer reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the knee, while the other two victims sustained unspecified injuries. All three were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and are said to be in stable condition.
Photos from the scene show Mosqueda’s body lying outside the facility, surrounded by evidence markers, as FBI agents launched an investigation into the incident.

🔥 FBI Takes Over Investigation
The FBI is now leading the investigation to determine Mosqueda’s motive for the attack. Authorities have yet to reveal whether he had any prior connection to the facility or its personnel.
Law enforcement sources say the rapid response of Border Patrol agents and local police prevented what could have been a far deadlier mass shooting.
“This could have been catastrophic if not for the swift and brave actions of the responding officers,” one DHS official stated.
👀 Who Was Ryan Louis Mosqueda?
Little is publicly known about Mosqueda at this time. Online records show he was a resident of Michigan, but investigators are working to piece together his background, including any possible extremist ties or mental health issues.
The tactical gear and high-powered rifle he used in the attack have raised alarms about the increasing militarization of civilian shooters.
