The 2024 Oscars may have been a night of celebration, but a viral moment between comedian Hannah Berner and rapper Megan Thee Stallion at the Vanity Fair after-party quickly turned into an online controversy. The exchange, which initially seemed like a lighthearted interaction, has sparked heated discussions across social media, with many calling out Berner for what they deemed a “microaggression.”

The Viral Oscars Moment

On March 2, during the prestigious Vanity Fair Oscars after-party, Hannah Berner, co-host of the Giggly Squad podcast, had the opportunity to interview Megan Thee Stallion alongside her co-host Paige DeSorbo. Excited to speak with the award-winning rapper, Berner enthusiastically expressed her admiration for Megan’s music. However, one particular comment quickly set the internet ablaze.

Berner, in an attempt to compliment Megan’s empowering sound, stated, “Your music has literally made me wanna—when I wanna fight someone, I listen to your music.” She elaborated, saying, “When people are talking s–t, I go, ‘Turn on Megan Thee Stallion.’”

Megan, known for her confidence and uplifting messages in her music, responded with a different perspective. The Wanna Be rapper quickly countered, saying, “Because you want to throw that fighting s–t out the window, and you want to get cute and be a bad b—h.”

The exchange was caught on camera and widely shared on social media, where reactions were mixed. Some fans laughed it off as an awkward yet amusing moment, while others felt that Berner’s comment played into harmful stereotypes.

Backlash and Accusations of a ‘Microaggression’

What seemed like an innocent comment soon became a topic of intense debate. Many Twitter users and pop culture commentators accused Berner of reinforcing the problematic trope of associating Black women, especially female rappers, with aggression and violence.

Critics argued that Megan Thee Stallion’s music is about empowerment, confidence, and self-love, not about inciting conflict. Some suggested that Berner’s choice of words reflected an unconscious bias that perpetuates a narrative often used against Black women in the entertainment industry.

One viral tweet read, “Why do people always associate powerful Black women with ‘fighting’ and aggression? Megan Thee Stallion makes music to empower, not to promote violence.” Another user commented, “This is a prime example of a microaggression. She may not have meant harm, but it’s the kind of language that subtly reinforces stereotypes.”

Hannah Berner Responds with an Apology

As the backlash mounted, Berner took to Instagram on March 6 to address the controversy and issue a public apology. In an Instagram Story, the 33-year-old comedian expressed regret over her word choice, acknowledging that she could have phrased her admiration for Megan’s music differently.

“Interviewing Megan Thee Stallion was a dream of mine,” Berner wrote. “I love her music, and it’s my go-to whenever I need to boost my confidence before a show. Looking back at the interview, I wish I used any other word except ‘fight’ to describe how her songs impact me.”

She continued, “It was a careless choice of words, and there was no ill intent. I recognize and acknowledge that what I said has a deeper meaning, and I am so sorry to Megan. I appreciate everyone who brought this to my attention.”

While some fans appreciated her apology and believed it to be sincere, others felt it was more of a damage-control effort rather than a meaningful reflection on the issue at hand. The debate continued, with discussions on how media personalities should be more mindful of the language they use when speaking about Black artists.

Megan Thee Stallion’s Response and Her Empowerment Message

While Megan Thee Stallion has not directly addressed the controversy beyond her initial response during the interview, her reaction in the moment spoke volumes. By redirecting the conversation to self-confidence and empowerment, Megan maintained her brand message—encouraging her fans, especially women, to embrace their strength without resorting to negativity or conflict.

Her response also resonated with many of her supporters, who praised her for gracefully steering the conversation toward positivity rather than engaging in any controversy. Megan has always been vocal about women’s empowerment, body positivity, and resilience, especially in the wake of personal challenges, including her highly publicized legal battle with Tory Lanez.

A Broader Conversation on Language and Stereotypes

The incident highlights a much larger discussion about the language used when describing Black women in the media. Words carry weight, and even seemingly harmless remarks can reinforce stereotypes that have long been used to diminish and mischaracterize Black female artists.

While Berner’s intent may not have been malicious, the backlash serves as a reminder that celebrities, influencers, and media figures must be mindful of their words and how they may be perceived by different audiences. It also underscores the importance of listening, learning, and acknowledging when mistakes are made.

Final Thoughts

Hannah Berner’s Oscars moment with Megan Thee Stallion may have started as an exciting celebrity encounter, but it quickly turned into a lesson in cultural sensitivity. As conversations around representation and stereotypes in entertainment continue to evolve, it’s clear that words matter—and how we use them can shape narratives in powerful ways.

Megan Thee Stallion, as always, continues to shine as a symbol of confidence, resilience, and female empowerment, proving once again why she is one of the most influential artists of her generation.

What are your thoughts on this controversy? Do you think Hannah Berner’s comment was taken out of context, or was the backlash justified? Let us know in the comments!
