Harlan Coben, the master of twist-filled page-turners, continues his successful foray into television with Netflix’s adaptation of his thriller Missing You. Following the massive success of Fool Me Once, one of Netflix’s most popular shows of 2024, Missing You promises to captivate audiences with its blend of suspense and heart-wrenching drama.

For Coben, showrunner Victoria Asare-Archer, and the cast, the challenge was to seamlessly blend the nail-biting twists with relatable character dynamics. “We wanted to keep the twists and turns and the suspense,” Coben explained during a press event in November. “But as [producer] Nicola Shindler mentioned, this is also a love story. Really, the story between Kat and Josh is at the center here.”

A Complex Protagonist and Intriguing Mystery

The series follows Detective Inspector Kat Donovan, portrayed by Slow Horses star Rosalind Eleazar. Kat is grappling with the death of her father (Lenny Henry) and the fallout from her broken engagement to Josh (Ashley Walters). Her journey takes a thrilling turn when she stumbles upon a mystery that could provide long-sought answers.

“It’s got all the trademark Harlan stuff that people love,” said Henry. “Those intriguing details, those relationships, and those hooks.” What sets Missing You apart, Henry emphasized, is its focus on Kat’s relationships with her friends, family, and colleagues, including her boss, Ellis Stagger (Richard Armitage, making his fourth appearance in a Coben adaptation).

“It’s the humanness of drama that makes us want to watch,” Henry noted. “It’s not just the procedural element, it’s everything now.”

Balancing Emotion and Suspense

Coben described Missing You as his most emotionally resonant adaptation to date. “This is the most emotional ending that I’ve experienced,” he admitted. “When I watched Episode 5, I actually cried. I think I had a little bit of a tear in my eye maybe with Fool Me Once also, but this will be the most emotional series.”

Rosalind Eleazar shared how engrossing the project was, recounting how she read the novel during her honeymoon. “The book is incredible,” she said. “It’s a real page-turner, and the final few moments are just the most shocking. I was not expecting the story to go that way.”

Victoria Asare-Archer, the series’ writer, echoed Eleazar’s sentiments. “I thought, ‘I’m gonna guess the ending. I’m gonna predict who’s the killer,’” she recalled. “And it was the only book I got to the end — gasp — I went straight back to the beginning. Even I couldn’t predict it. It’s definitely both emotional and there’s a huge twist.”

A Perfect Binge-Watch

With all five episodes dropping simultaneously on Netflix, the series is primed for a binge-worthy experience. Asare-Archer emphasized that her focus was on crafting a compelling story rather than dictating viewing habits. “Our job is to write brilliant stories and make a brilliant series. It is up to the audience to decide how they want to watch it,” she explained. “Having said that, if this is as gripping and character-full and emotional as we think it is, I think it should be a series that you don’t want to stop watching. And it’s only five episodes, so that’s a perfect New Year’s Day binge!”

Why Missing You Stands Out

With standout performances, a deeply emotional core, and Coben’s signature twists, Missing You is a testament to how the crime genre is evolving. As Lenny Henry put it, “It’s like crack for television.” Combining suspense with richly developed relationships, the series is set to become a new favorite for fans of gripping, character-driven drama.

Available now on Netflix, Missing You is poised to spark conversation and keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
