What started as a heroic mission to save French forests from a raging wildfire turned into a terrifying near-tragedy Sunday evening … when a firefighting helicopter suddenly spun out of control and plunged into a lake — and the entire ordeal was caught on camera.

The Terrifying Crash
The Morane chopper, operated by the Finistère fire department, had already completed 27 water drops as it worked to contain a 10-hectare blaze in Beuzec-Cap-Sizun, in northwestern France.
But when the crew dipped low into Rosporden Lake to refill, things went horribly wrong.
Witnesses described the helicopter dipping too far into the water before spinning wildly out of control. The aircraft rotated several dizzying times, one of its blades snapped clean off … and seconds later, the chopper slammed into the lake with a sickening splash.
“I thought it was going to explode into pieces,” one witness said, recalling the terrifying sight.

Miraculous Escape
Despite the violent crash, both the pilot and firefighter on board managed to free themselves from the wreckage. They swam to shore and — incredibly — walked away without serious injuries.
Authorities say it’s nothing short of a miracle, considering how catastrophic the accident looked from the shoreline.
What Caused the Helicopter to Go Down?
Right now, investigators are combing through the wreckage to determine what went wrong in the cockpit. Early reports suggest a malfunction occurred while the crew attempted to refill the water bucket — a process that requires precision and timing.
The helicopter had been a critical part of efforts to contain the wildfire, which threatened to spread rapidly in the dry summer heat.
France’s Firefight With Nature
Wildfires have become a recurring nightmare across France in recent years, fueled by hotter, drier summers. Firefighters often rely on both airplanes and helicopters to dump massive quantities of water over burning forests — but the risky maneuvers leave no room for error.
Sunday’s crash underscores just how dangerous that work really is.

Social Media Reacts
Footage of the accident has since gone viral, shocking viewers around the world. Many praised the crew’s survival as “miraculous,” while others pointed out the increasing dangers firefighters face as wildfires intensify in Europe.
“Those men are heroes,” one comment read. “They went down doing everything they could to save lives and nature.”
Looking Ahead
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, while the Finistère fire department is reviewing flight safety procedures. Meanwhile, reinforcements have been dispatched to keep the Beuzec-Cap-Sizun blaze from spreading further.
For now, residents — and the world — are breathing a sigh of relief that this disaster ended with two lives saved instead of lost.
