Jermaine Dupri is bringing Atlanta’s most iconic—and infamous—club to your screen. The Grammy-winning producer and cultural tastemaker just revealed his upcoming five-part docuseries, Magic City: An American Fantasy, during a major panel at the 2025 American Black Film Festival in Atlanta.
The highly anticipated Starz docuseries explores the untold story behind Magic City, the strip club that has shaped hip-hop, sports, and Black culture for nearly four decades.
“It’s really a Jermaine Dupri album disguised as a documentary,” Dupri said with a grin during the panel discussion, joined by executive producer Cole Brown and journalist Jemele Hill.

🎧 From Soundtrack to Spotlight: How the Project Was Born
On the BET Awards red carpet, Jermaine Dupri revealed how Magic City: An American Fantasy came to life.
“It started as a soundtrack,” he said.
“Then I realized—this is basically a Jermaine Dupri album, but with a bunch of artists I’ve never worked with before.”
He explained that working with Atlanta-based talent became central to the project’s evolution:
“I’m putting artists from Atlanta on this. That’s exciting to me,” he added.
“People keep saying ‘bridge the gap’—I’m just trying to put my city on. We gon’ rock out. It’s an Atlanta summer.”
📺 Why Magic City Still Matters
Since opening its doors in the mid-1980s, Magic City has been ground zero for some of the most defining moments in Southern hip-hop.
It’s where:
- Future once worked on music while dancers performed in the background.
- Migos music blew up before hitting national radio.
- Major athletes celebrated championships and made headlines.
- DJs tested the next big club bangers.
Magic City is more than a strip club—it’s a cultural barometer for Atlanta and beyond.
The club’s influence is undeniable—from launching hits to shaping fashion trends to influencing hip-hop language and aesthetic. Dupri says it was important to honor that legacy with depth.
📹 Exclusive Access Like Never Before
Magic City: An American Fantasy is expected to reveal:
- Never-before-seen footage from inside the club
- Exclusive interviews with dancers, promoters, DJs, and club staff
- The financial ecosystem that powers Atlanta’s strip club industry
- The crossover between rap music, sex work, and fame
“This is the kind of story only someone from Atlanta could tell,” Dupri shared.
“It’s personal, it’s real, and it’s long overdue.”
✨ Starz Bets Big on Black Culture Again
Following the success of Power, BMF, and P-Valley, Starz is once again doubling down on bold, Black-led storytelling.
“We’re proud to spotlight a project that uncovers the hidden layers of cultural influence in a way that feels both intimate and cinematic,” Busby said.
With Magic City: An American Fantasy, Starz is not just entertaining audiences—they’re documenting modern Black history in a provocative, uncensored way.
