Jussie Smollett is attempting a Hollywood comeback, but the shadow of his 2019 hate crime hoax continues to loom large. According to Gloria Rodriguez, attorney for Abel and Ola Osundairo — the brothers who claim Jussie hired them to stage the attack — the actor’s failure to come clean is jeopardizing his career and public image.
Rodriguez tells us Smollett is “making it harder on himself” and wasting his talent by refusing to acknowledge the truth about that frigid night in Chicago.
The 2019 Incident Still Haunts Him
ICYMI, Jussie recently told Variety that the “real villains” in his alleged attack were the Chicago Police Department and former Mayor Rahm Emanuel. He doubled down on his original claim: two MAGA hat-wearing Trump supporters attacked him, poured bleach on him, placed a noose around his neck, and shouted racist and homophobic slurs.
But Rodriguez insists this narrative will continue to follow him unless he tells the truth. “The public is tired of his lies,” she says, adding that Jussie needs people on his side if he truly wants to reclaim his pre-2019 career trajectory.

Conviction and Controversy
Jussie was convicted in connection with the hoax, but the verdict was later overturned on a technicality after he struck a deal with prosecutors. Rodriguez emphasizes that authorities and a jury believed the Osundairo brothers’ version of events.
“Jussie is as guilty as he was when he concocted this plan,” Rodriguez says bluntly. “He filed a false police report. There’s no world where both Jussie and the Osundairo brothers are telling the truth.”
Career Moves Amid Public Skepticism
Despite the controversy, Smollett has been busy. He’s releasing new music, directed a film, and is slated to appear in an upcoming FOX reality show. But Rodriguez warns that no amount of creative output will erase public doubt.
“If Jussie wants to be a star again, the public has to want him back,” Rodriguez says. “And that’s impossible unless he offers genuine reflections and admits this was a prank that went too far.”
She also criticizes Smollett for blaming Rahm Emanuel, calling the claim “absurd.” Rodriguez notes that the former mayor had no authority to file criminal charges and can only authorize civil action. She applauds police for taking Jussie’s claims seriously at the time.
The Cost to Chicago
The City of Chicago pursued Smollett for a six-figure sum, seeking reimbursement for the resources spent investigating the alleged attack. Jussie ultimately settled by donating $50,000 to a charity of his choice.
Rodriguez says the actor still fails to acknowledge the waste of taxpayer time, energy, and money.

Brothers Hope for Honesty, Not Spite
Despite the ongoing drama, the Osundairo brothers reportedly harbor no ill will toward Jussie. Rodriguez says they simply want him to be honest with himself and the public.
“We want him to take responsibility,” she explains, “so he can truly move forward. But they’re not out for revenge — they wish him the best.”
Jussie’s representatives have not responded to requests for comment.
Bottom Line
Even with new projects on the horizon, Jussie Smollett’s past continues to complicate his path forward. Without a candid acknowledgment of the events from 2019, any Hollywood comeback may remain an uphill battle.
