TV legend Kelsey Grammer is opening up like never before—shedding light on the haunting details of his younger sister’s brutal murder, decades later. The actor broke down during a powerful interview with Diane Sawyer, revealing the chilling abuse his sister endured before her death.
Grammer, best known for his Emmy-winning roles on Cheers and Frasier, appeared on ABC News to promote his new memoir, “Karen: A Brother Remembers,” a heartbreaking tribute to his younger sister, Karen Grammer, who was abducted, raped, and murdered in 1975 when she was just 18 years old.
A Brother’s Grief Still Raw After 50 Years
In the televised special, Grammer bravely recounts the horrifying final hours of his sister’s life—pausing frequently as tears overcame him. He reads from the memoir, voice cracking, as he describes how Karen was kidnapped by a group of men who had just robbed the restaurant where she worked in Colorado Springs.
“She was taken to a nearby house,” Grammer said. “And the men who grabbed her took turns raping her.”
The actor’s voice trembled as he continued reading from the chapter detailing the events that followed. Karen was eventually stabbed to death and left to die alone, a crime that would devastate the Grammer family—and leave permanent emotional scars on the future star.
Keeping Karen’s Memory Alive
Grammer says his goal in writing the book was to honor Karen’s memory beyond the headlines, and to tell the story of who she was as a person—not just a victim. “Karen: A Brother Remembers” reflects on her dreams, her kindness, and her close bond with her brother.
In the interview, he also revealed that he recently returned to Colorado to revisit the places tied to her murder, a deeply emotional journey that he hopes will help bring some sense of healing—not just for himself, but for others who’ve experienced similar trauma.
The Man Behind the Murder: No Forgiveness
Karen’s killer, Freddie Glenn, was later arrested, tried, and convicted of her murder. Glenn is currently serving a life sentence in prison. Grammer has consistently opposed Glenn’s attempts at parole and vows to continue doing so for as long as necessary.
“He doesn’t deserve a second chance,” Grammer stated emphatically. “Karen never got one.”
A Pain That Led to Self-Destruction
In a separate interview with People Magazine, Grammer admitted that Karen’s death sent him into a tailspin of depression, substance abuse, and self-destruction.
Throughout the late ’80s and ’90s, during the height of his success on Cheers and Frasier, Grammer was arrested several times for drunk driving and cocaine possession. He later entered rehab and has now been sober for several years, crediting his recovery to therapy, fatherhood, and his desire to find peace with the past.
“Karen’s death changed everything,” he said. “I just didn’t know how to live with that kind of pain.”
