Renowned Nigerian music executive and Kennis Music CEO, Kenny Ogungbe, popularly known as Baba Keke, has addressed longstanding rumors surrounding the breakup of the iconic music group Plantashun Boiz. The group, which included legendary artists 2Face Idibia, Blackface, and Faze, disbanded in 2004 after the release of their second album, Sold Out.
Speculations have persisted that the group’s split was influenced by Kennis Music’s decision to sign 2Face Idibia as a solo artist. However, speaking on the latest episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast, Ogungbe categorically denied these claims.
Ogungbe’s Clarification: 2Face Approached Kennis Music After the Split
In his remarks, Ogungbe revealed that the breakup occurred before 2Face ever approached him.
“People have been saying I’m the one responsible for the breakup of Plantashun Boiz. That’s not true. 2Face came to me himself after the group had broken up, saying he wanted to sign with Kennis Music. It was actually Eedris Abdulkareem who encouraged me to sign him, which I did,” Ogungbe explained.
The Journey of Plantashun Boiz
Plantashun Boiz was one of Nigeria’s most celebrated music groups, known for their groundbreaking sound and chemistry. Their split in 2004 marked the end of an era, but the trio briefly reunited in 2007 to release their third and final album, Plan B. Despite the reunion, they eventually went their separate ways again, each pursuing solo careers.
Blackface Speaks on the Rift with 2Face
In a related development, Blackface, another member of Plantashun Boiz, recently opened up about his long-standing rift with 2Face during an interview on ‘The Honest Bunch Podcast’. He attributed their strained relationship to what he described as 2Face’s “inferiority complex” towards him.
Despite the issues, Blackface expressed a desire to reconcile with 2Face, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness.
“I and Faze are cool. Maybe 2Face has an inferiority complex towards me,” Blackface said. “It is time to bury the hatchet. I forgive 2Face for everything he has done to me, knowingly and unknowingly. He should also make space to forgive me for anything I have done.”
Blackface’s comments reflect a willingness to move forward, signaling hope for a potential resolution between the former bandmates.
A Legacy of Collaboration and Conflict
The story of Plantashun Boiz is one of both collaboration and conflict. As pioneers in the Nigerian music industry, their influence continues to resonate. While their journey has been marked by success, individual rivalries have overshadowed their shared achievements.
Kenny Ogungbe’s clarification sheds light on a crucial chapter in their history, dispelling misconceptions about his role in the group’s split. His commitment to nurturing talent, as seen in his support of 2Face’s solo career, underscores his legacy as a cornerstone of Nigerian music.
The Future of Forgiveness
As fans reflect on the legacy of Plantashun Boiz, the potential reconciliation between 2Face and Blackface is a hopeful sign. Their story serves as a reminder of the challenges and triumphs that come with creative partnerships.
In an industry as dynamic as Nigerian music, the enduring impact of Plantashun Boiz remains a testament to the power of collaboration, even in the face of adversity.
