LeBron James Temporarily Steps Away from Lakers
Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is taking a leave of absence from the team for personal reasons, according to ESPN. Lakers head coach J.J. Redick confirmed James’ status after the team’s practice on Wednesday, December 12, noting that the absence has been excused.
“LeBron is not with the team right now,” Redick said. “He’s out for personal reasons, excused absence.” While Redick did not provide specifics, he emphasized that James is “taking some time” and left open the possibility that the four-time champion might miss Friday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Managing Workload in a Grueling Season
Now in his 22nd NBA season, James continues to be a cornerstone for the Lakers, but the toll of a demanding schedule and physical wear is apparent. Redick highlighted ongoing communication with both James and his athletic trainer, Mike Mancias, about managing the veteran’s workload.
“In the game, he’s asked for a sub a couple of times because he’s gassed,” Redick said. “We have to be cognizant as we play more and more games, just the cumulative effect of playing a lot of minutes. Sunday, being banged up with the foot thing, it felt like a good opportunity for him to get some rest.”
James, who turns 40 at the end of December, is averaging 23 points on 49.5% shooting (35.9% from three), 9.1 assists, and 8.0 rebounds this season.
Team Steps Up in James’ Absence
As the Lakers navigate James’ leave, backup center Christian Koloko emphasized the importance of the team stepping up in his absence.
“We just got to do our part and just get better so that when he comes back, he can just look at us and be like, ‘Oh, yeah, [they] were actually working,’ when he wasn’t there. But we know he’ll come back and just pick up everything. He’s been in the NBA for a long time,” Koloko said.
Extended Break Offers Time to Recharge
The Lakers’ early exit from the NBA Cup provided the team with an extended break, which Redick has encouraged players to use for rest and recovery. “Heck, if somebody wants to go spend a couple of nights in Santa Barbara and relax, that’s fine too,” Redick said after the team’s recent game against the Blazers. “It’s a quarterway through the season.”
Final Thoughts
While LeBron James’ absence raises questions about how the Lakers will manage in the short term, the team remains optimistic about his return. James’ ability to balance his impressive stats with the physical demands of his 22nd season reflects his enduring greatness, even as the NBA legend approaches a milestone 40th birthday.
