A Los Angeles Lakers fan is taking LeBron James to small claims court, claiming the NBA superstar misled him into spending over $800 on game tickets after a viral social media post.
Andrew Garcia, a lifelong Lakers supporter, filed the claim in Los Angeles on October 8th, accusing James of “fraud, deception, and misrepresentation.” According to court documents obtained by ABC7 Los Angeles, Garcia believed James was making the basketball world’s biggest announcement: his retirement.
“A lot of this case is about [the] principle for me,” Garcia told ABC7.
The Social Media Post That Sparked the Lawsuit
Earlier this week, James teased what he called “the decision of all decisions” on social media, leaving fans speculating wildly about his next move. With the announcement coming just weeks before a highly anticipated Lakers vs. Cleveland Cavaliers game on October 30, many assumed the star was planning a farewell tour, similar to Kobe Bryant’s legendary send-off in 2015.
“Right away, I thought back to when Kobe Bryant announced his farewell tour about nine or ten years ago, and I saw that as an opportunity I didn’t want to miss out on,” Garcia explained.
Instead, it was revealed that James’ “announcement” was actually part of a new brand partnership with Hennessy cognac, drawing inspiration from his controversial 2010 move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat.
Fan Outrage: “He Should Have Known”
Garcia says the mix-up cost him $865.66—the price he paid for the tickets—and he is not seeking emotional damages, only a refund.
“For him to do something like that, he should know— or should have known—that this was gonna happen,” Garcia said. “Fans are gonna go spend their hard-earned money thinking this is something meaningful.”
The lawsuit has sparked debates online about celebrity marketing tactics, fan expectations, and the blurry line between promotional content and personal announcements.
LeBron’s Team Silent So Far
As of now, LeBron James and his representatives have not commented on the lawsuit, which could set the stage for a small-claims showdown. Sports fans and social media users have already flooded platforms with reactions, ranging from amusement to outrage over the perceived marketing stunt.
Some commentators noted that savvy fans should have anticipated a brand partnership twist, while others sympathized with Garcia, highlighting how fan loyalty sometimes comes at a steep price.
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t the first time LeBron James’ announcements have sparked major fan reactions. From free agency moves to high-profile endorsements, the four-time NBA champion often dominates headlines, proving that anything he posts online can have serious real-world implications.
With the Lakers vs. Cavaliers game approaching, all eyes will be on James—not just for his performance on the court, but for how this ticket refund drama unfolds in court.
