Nicholas Mpiirwe’s Final Journey Home
The Ugandan entertainment industry mourns the loss of Nicholas Mpiirwe, affectionately known as DJ Messe Bontwe, a legendary comedian and founding member of the Amarula Family comedy group. Following his demise on 12th December 2024 in the United States, Messe Bontwe’s body will be laid to rest on Monday, 20th January 2025, in Rwampala District.
Repatriation of His Body to Uganda
According to an update shared by his close friend Grace Ssekamate, Messe Bontwe’s body left the United States on 14th January 2025 and is set to arrive in Uganda on 16th January. Upon arrival, the body will be handed over to the Executive Funeral Services and the family.
It will then proceed to a funeral home for an overnight stay before a series of events to honor the comedian’s life and legacy:

- 17th January (Friday): A service will be held at Munyonyo Church of Uganda, followed by a journey to his home in Kabuuma.
- 18th January (Saturday): A tribute viewing will take place at the National Theatre, where colleagues in the arts will pay their respects.
- 19th January (Sunday): The body will make its way to his ancestral home in Rwampala.
- 20th January (Monday): Nicholas Mpiirwe will be laid to rest at 2:00 PM in Rwampala District.
A Life Dedicated to Comedy and Art
Nicholas Mpiirwe, widely admired for his sharp wit and comedic genius, was a trailblazer in Uganda’s entertainment industry. As a founding member of the Amarula Family, he made a significant impact, inspiring many upcoming comedians.
After relocating to the United States to seek greener pastures, Mpiirwe remained connected to his roots and continued to inspire the art community back home.

The repatriation and funeral arrangements have been made possible through the collective efforts of the North American Ugandan community, friends, and fans.
“We are deeply grateful for the support shown by the North American Ugandan communities in repatriating our brother Nicholas Mpiirwe. Your tremendous support has made this difficult process manageable, and we can never take it for granted,” said the organizing team.

Nicholas Mpiirwe’s journey back home marks a somber moment for his family, friends, and fans. As he is laid to rest, his contributions to Uganda’s comedy scene will forever be cherished, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations.
