Lil Durk’s legal troubles are deepening as the Chicago rapper was denied bond during a court hearing on Thursday, May 8, 2025. The All My Life artist, born Durk Derrick Banks, is facing serious murder-for-hire charges linked to a 2022 shooting in Los Angeles.
According to Rolling Stone‘s Nancy Dillon, Durk appeared in court and smiled briefly at over 20 supporters before the judge delivered the ruling that he will remain in custody until his trial later this year.
Legal Team Argues Lyrics and Online Posts Are Weak Evidence
Durk’s attorneys urged the court to either dismiss the case entirely or at least grant him bond, arguing that the prosecution’s evidence heavily relies on fan-generated internet content and song lyrics, not concrete proof.
“You can’t hold a man based on art and speculation,” his legal team argued.
But the judge sided with prosecutors, emphasizing the severity of the allegations and choosing to keep the rapper behind bars.
Lyrics Dropped from Prosecution’s Argument
In a minor win for Lil Durk, prosecutors have removed his lyrics from the case. The controversial move to use hip-hop lyrics as evidence has sparked national debate, with many arguing it unfairly targets Black artists.
Instead, prosecutors now plan to rely on other forms of alleged evidence, including digital communications and financial transactions, to support their claims that Durk orchestrated, funded, and facilitated a hit on rapper Quando Rondo in retaliation for the 2020 killing of Durk’s close friend, King Von.
The shooting in question resulted in the death of Rondo’s cousin, Lul Pab, during a 2022 Los Angeles incident.
Durk’s Legal Team Criticizes Use of Hip-Hop Culture in Court
While the case moves forward, Durk’s legal representatives continue to criticize the broader trend of weaponizing hip-hop culture and lyrics in criminal cases, calling it a violation of artistic freedom.
Despite the mounting legal pressure, Durk’s music career hasn’t come to a complete stop, although the charges have significantly impacted his public appearances and promotional plans.
What’s Next?
The trial is scheduled to begin on October 14, 2025, and while it remains unclear whether Lil Durk will get another opportunity to post bond, his legal team is preparing for a long and challenging fight ahead.
