A terrifying incident unfolded at an assisted-living facility when a man armed with a chainsaw engaged in a tense standoff with police. The entire confrontation, which occurred in December, was captured on dramatic body cam footage.
The Chainsaw Confrontation
The footage shows Daniel H. Escalera, an Indiana man, wielding a chainsaw inside the River Glen of St. Charles assisted living facility in Illinois. As officers arrive, Escalera is seen revving the chainsaw while repeatedly stating that he just wants to see his wife. Despite officers ordering him to drop the weapon, he continues trying to get it started.
Once Escalera successfully fires up the chainsaw, an officer deploys a Taser, but it proves ineffective. Escalera quickly recovers and charges through the facility, running into a cafeteria and down a hallway while shrieking, as officers pursue him.
Violent Encounter with Police
In a harrowing moment captured from another angle, Escalera lunges at an officer with the chainsaw, making contact before dropping it and attempting to flee. As he rushes past residents—including one in a mobility scooter—officers open fire, striking him multiple times. First aid was administered on-site, but Escalera ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Investigation and Toxicology Report
A joint press release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Illinois State Police, and the St. Charles Police Department revealed that Escalera had initially been on the property to cut down a tree. However, he unexpectedly entered the facility’s lobby and began harassing residents with the chainsaw.
An autopsy later determined that Escalera had traces of amphetamines, methamphetamines, and olanzapine—a medication used to treat schizophrenia—in his system at the time of his death.
Police Cleared of Wrongdoing
Following an official review, the officers involved were cleared of any wrongdoing. Multiple officials praised their efforts to de-escalate the situation before resorting to lethal force. The chilling footage has since sparked discussions on mental health crises and law enforcement’s handling of such dangerous encounters.
