On Friday, April 25, 2025, rap superstar Megan Thee Stallion thrilled fans with the release of the official music video for her new single, “Whenever.”
The visually stunning production, clocking in at just under three minutes, offers a wild, dreamlike journey through the rapper’s vivid imagination — blending high-concept art with Megan’s signature boldness and charisma.

A Surrealist Dreamscape Brought to Life

Directed by Hannah Lux Davis, known for her work with pop and hip-hop heavyweights like Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, the “Whenever” music video draws heavy inspiration from the world of Surrealism.
In a series of whimsical, sometimes mind-bending scenes, Megan dances among melting clocks, encounters security guards with fish heads, and even poses seductively inside a giant office fish tank — showing off her toned physique in a glittering aquatic fantasy.

Fans and critics alike quickly picked up on the video’s resemblance to Salvador Dalí’s iconic 1931 painting, The Persistence of Memory, a masterpiece that epitomizes the Surrealist movement.
Dalí’s work famously explores the fluidity of time and the blending of dreams and reality — themes that Megan echoes in her playful yet symbolic visuals.

Surrealism, which emerged in Europe during the 1920s and expanded post-World War I, focused on dissolving the boundaries between the conscious and unconscious mind. Artists aimed to fuse fantasy and everyday life, creating startling juxtapositions that challenge conventional thinking.
Megan’s video masterfully adapts this style, adding a modern hip-hop twist that feels both nostalgic and futuristic at once.

Fans Praise Megan’s Bold Artistic Vision

Social media erupted shortly after the video’s premiere, with fans praising Megan for pushing artistic boundaries in mainstream rap visuals.
“#Whenever is pure ART,” one fan tweeted. “Megan Thee Stallion serving Salvador Dalí realness — we are not worthy!”
Another user commented, “This is what happens when you let BLACK WOMEN be creative without limits. Megan’s mind >>>.”

Industry insiders also applauded Megan’s bold creative choices, noting that while hip-hop videos have dabbled in surrealism before (think Missy Elliott’s legendary videos), Megan’s execution feels particularly refined and conceptually strong.

Lyric Theft Accusations Cloud the Release

However, even as excitement for “Whenever” builds, controversy has surfaced that threatens to overshadow Megan’s artistic triumph.

Shortly after the video’s debut, Houston-based rapper Ivy K publicly accused Megan Thee Stallion of stealing lyrics from her 2024 song, “It’s Whateva.”
Taking to Instagram Live, Ivy K emotionally detailed her allegations, claiming that Megan’s team had reached out to her about possibly collaborating on a remix of “It’s Whateva.”
But according to Ivy, the conversation abruptly ended — and weeks later, Megan’s “Whenever” was released without her involvement or consent.

During the live stream, Ivy K played side-by-side comparisons of both tracks, highlighting the similarity between the hooks:

  • Ivy K’s track: “B**h it’s whatever / He, it’s whatever”
  • Megan’s hook: “It’s whenever, b**h / It’s whatever, he.”

While the overall flow, tempo, and production differ between the two songs, the overlap in phrasing has led some fans to demand accountability and explanations.

Is It Really Theft? The Internet Weighs In

The situation became even murkier when internet sleuths pointed out that the hook Ivy K and Megan both use may not be entirely original.
Khia’s 2008 song “It’s Whatever” also features similar phrasing, suggesting that the lyrical motif might stem from hip-hop’s long tradition of interpolation and homage rather than outright plagiarism.

Still, the key difference, as many commentators noted, lies in whether Megan’s team actively contacted Ivy K about a remix, thereby acknowledging Ivy’s work before allegedly moving forward without her.

“If Megan’s team approached Ivy, there’s a paper trail,” one entertainment lawyer told Billboard anonymously. “And if there’s a paper trail, Ivy could have a valid legal claim, even if the phrases are somewhat common.”

At this point, Megan Thee Stallion’s camp has not publicly responded to the allegations.

Megan Thee Stallion: A Pop Culture Powerhouse

Controversy aside, the release of “Whenever” and its accompanying video further cements Megan Thee Stallion’s reputation as one of the most innovative forces in contemporary music.
Since bursting onto the scene with viral freestyles and her breakout hit “Big Ole Freak,” Megan has continually pushed the envelope, blending southern rap traditions with pop culture flair and fearless feminism.

Over the past year alone, Megan has achieved several major milestones:

  • She landed her first Vogue cover in February 2025.
  • She expanded her Hottie Sauce partnership with Popeyes.
  • She announced an upcoming tour slated for Fall 2025, with dates in both the U.S. and Europe.
  • She collaborated with major brands such as Nike and Revlon, proving her influence extends beyond music into fashion and beauty.

Her previous album, “Traumazine,” earned critical acclaim for its emotional honesty, exploring themes of grief, betrayal, and resilience.
With “Whenever,” Megan seems to be pivoting toward a more playful, artistic direction — though the underlying tensions within the industry remain palpable.

Final Thoughts: Can Art Outshine the Drama?

As discussions around the “Whenever” lyric controversy continue to swirl, Megan Thee Stallion finds herself at a familiar crossroads faced by many powerful women in entertainment: navigating public scrutiny while striving to innovate and evolve.

Whether or not the allegations escalate into a legal dispute, one thing is clear — Megan’s fans remain fiercely loyal.
The stunning visuals of “Whenever,” combined with the hypnotic rhythm and unapologetic energy Megan brings to the table, guarantee that this single will be a mainstay on playlists throughout the summer.

Only time will tell if the controversy fizzles out — but one thing’s for certain: Megan Thee Stallion’s artistic fire shows no signs of burning out anytime soon.
