Businesses Feeling the Pinch

Dan Binkiewicz, co-owner of Sweet Liberty Drinks and Supply Co., tells TMZ that last summer was one of their worst seasons—and things aren’t looking any better this time around. With new city regulations limiting visitors, many establishments are struggling to stay afloat.

Josh Wallack, co-runner of Mango’s Tropical Cafe, echoes similar concerns, saying Spring Break was once the highlight of the year for businesses. Now, the restrictions are causing a domino effect, impacting staff wages due to early curfews and lower foot traffic.

Financial Struggles Across Hospitality

Mitch Novick from Sherbrooke Hotel calls out the new $100 parking rule, saying it has caused guests to cancel their stays due to excessive costs.

Meanwhile, AJ, general manager at Palace Bar, reports a huge loss in seating capacity, with the inability to use sidewalks cutting their availability by 180 spots.

Balancing Safety with Business Viability

Despite the frustration, some business owners acknowledge the need for safety measures. Palace Bar’s AJ points out the past shootings near their venue, supporting the city’s efforts while also advocating for a better balance between safety and economic sustainability.

City Reports a Different Perspective

While businesses are feeling the financial squeeze, the Greater Miami and the Beaches Hotel Association reports an 11% rise in visitors and a 1.8% increase in hotel bookings compared to 2023.

Additionally, city officials highlight positive safety outcomes:

  • Arrests dropped by 8%
  • Felony crimes fell by 19%
  • Service calls decreased by 5%
  • No shootings or fatalities recorded this season

Many hotels and restaurants are backing the city’s crackdown, citing improved safety and reduced crime as a big win compared to previous years.

What’s Next?

With business owners pushing for solutions that protect both economic vitality and public safety, the ongoing debate in Miami Beach is far from over. As the Spring Break season continues, all eyes are on whether city officials will consider adjustments to policies while maintaining the newfound security improvements.

Stay tuned for further updates on how this high-stakes balancing act unfolds.
