Former First Lady Michelle Obama is standing firmly behind her daughter, Malia, as she steps into her own creative spotlight—without the famous Obama surname.

In 2024, Malia debuted her short film The Heart at the Sundance Film Festival under the name Malia Ann, dropping her family’s last name in a move that sparked both curiosity and admiration.

Speaking with actress Kate Hudson on the Sibling Revelry podcast, which Hudson co-hosts with her brother Oliver, Michelle Obama explained the significance behind her daughter’s choice.

“It is very important for my kids to feel like they’ve earned what they are getting in the world, and they don’t want people to assume they don’t work hard—that they’re just naturally handed things,” Michelle said.

“They’re very sensitive to that—they want to be their own people,” she continued. “We [she and Barack Obama] were like, ‘They’re still going to know it’s you, Malia.’ But we respected the fact that she’s trying to make her way.”

Malia’s decision comes as part of a broader effort by the Obama daughters to forge their own paths outside the long shadow of their family’s political legacy.

In a separate appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Michelle Obama candidly discussed her own personal evolution and the role therapy has played in her life post-White House.

“At this phase of my life, I’m in therapy right now because I’m transitioning,” Michelle shared.

With both daughters now grown and living independently, Michelle described herself as an “empty nester,” finally able to make decisions purely for herself.

“I completed a really hard thing—keeping my family intact while being in the public eye for nearly two decades,” she said. “And now, for the first time… every choice that I’m making is completely mine.”

Michelle emphasized that therapy has helped her navigate this new chapter, calling it a much-needed “tune-up” as she moves beyond the responsibilities that once defined her.

Conclusion:
From embracing her daughter’s desire for independence to seeking personal clarity through therapy, Michelle Obama continues to be a source of strength, wisdom, and relatability. Malia’s name change may mark a shift in how she presents herself professionally, but it’s clear she has the full support of her mother in carving out a path of her own.
