Muni Long, known for her vocal prowess and hit songwriting, has made it clear that she’s not here to write “soulful” music for non-Black artists. Taking to Instagram, the Hrs and Hrs singer posted a humorous yet pointed response aimed at Atlantic Records’ president, who had approached her for her songwriting skills.

“Me to the President of Atlantic asking me to write ‘soulful’ songs for non-melanated artists,” she captioned a video set to a Lil Boosie voiceover, adding a dose of sass to her response.

Protecting Her Vault

In the caption, Muni elaborated on her stance, recalling the interaction in greater detail.

“And when I said NO, one of ’em gone say, ‘You can reach in that Priscilla Renea vault and see what you have in there,’” she wrote, referencing her earlier stage name as a songwriter.

“Boy, do you know what a VAULT is? That’s where you keep the valuables. If you don’t get somewhere and sit down,” she added. “I wanted to cuss them out so bad, y’all.”

While she refrained from naming specific executives, Warner Music Group recently announced Elliot Grainge and Craig Kallman as the new CEOs of Atlantic Music Group and its subsidiary Atlantic Records.

A Prolific Songwriting Career

Although Muni Long is selective about her projects, her resume as a composer speaks volumes. She’s penned hits for music heavyweights like Rihanna, Chris Brown, Mariah Carey, and Mary J. Blige. Notable credits include Ariana Grande’s “imagine” and Madonna’s “Gang Bang.”

Her sharp clapback underscores her commitment to protecting her artistry and staying true to her values, even as she continues to solidify her legacy in the industry.

Personal Growth and ‘Revenge’

In a recent interview with Rated R&B, Muni Long opened up about her album Revenge and how personal growth has shaped her journey as an artist.

“I’m going through a lot in my personal life, relationship-wise, [and] career-wise. There are a lot of people that I would be justified in being angry with,” she said. “Instead, I’ve been doing personal growth. I’m realizing that anger, disgust, betrayal—any of those emotions—only tell me what I need to get away from. Other than that, they don’t serve me. They don’t help me reach my goals.”

Muni Long’s Next Chapter

As Muni Long continues to evolve as a musician and a woman, her refusal to compromise her artistry sets a powerful example for others in the industry. With her impressive songwriting catalog and deeply personal approach to music, she’s proving that staying true to yourself is always worth it.
