The world of NASCAR is mourning the loss of one of its most influential figures. H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, the legendary promoter and former President and General Manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway, has died at the age of 86.
A family statement released Thursday confirmed Wheeler passed away peacefully of natural causes, surrounded by loved ones.
A Visionary in Racing
NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France paid tribute to Wheeler’s enduring legacy, calling him a “visionary whose name became synonymous with promotion and innovation in our sport.”
“During his decades leading Charlotte Motor Speedway, Humpy transformed the fan experience through his creativity, bold ideas and tireless passion. His efforts helped expand NASCAR’s national footprint, cementing Charlotte as a must-visit racing and entertainment complex.”
Wheeler led Charlotte Motor Speedway for 33 years, shaping the venue into one of the most iconic and fan-friendly racetracks in the world.
From Racing to Hollywood
Beyond his executive role, Wheeler even left his mark on pop culture. He lent his voice to Tex Dinoco, the 1975 Cadillac Coupe de Ville in Pixar’s “Cars” and “Cars 3.”
Hall of Fame Honors
Wheeler’s contributions to motorsports earned him a place in several halls of fame:
- International Motorsports Hall of Fame (2006)
- Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (2009)
- Carolina Boxing Hall of Fame (1992)
Earlier this year, NASCAR announced Wheeler would receive the NASCAR Landmark Award, honoring individuals who made significant contributions to the growth and prestige of the sport.
A Champion Beyond the Track
Long before he became a motorsports executive, Wheeler was a talented boxer, amassing a 40-2 record and winning a Golden Gloves championship at 17. His passion for the sport eventually earned him induction into the Carolina Boxing Hall of Fame.
Remembering Humpy Wheeler
Wheeler will be remembered not only for his bold showmanship and passion for fans, but also for the way he helped NASCAR evolve into a national powerhouse. From creative promotions to innovative track experiences, his influence on the sport will be felt for generations.
Rest in peace, Humpy Wheeler. The racing world has lost a true legend.
